OUR SECTION.
A Few Inducements Which Nevada
County Offers to Settiers.
First—Large areas of fertile lands, secured by Government patent, can be purchased
at such reasonable figures that afew hundred
dollars is sufficint to pay for a small farm.
Second—The standard fruits grown in
this county are the finest cf their varieties
grown in the world. They are of a superior flavor_and have a firmness of texture
that gives them better shipping and keeping
qualities than those grown at lower altitudes
and they find a ready market at remunera—
tive prices.
Third—The long summers permit of the
rotation of crops, and the raising of two and
even three different crops from the same
land in a single season.
Fourth—There is a ready market for all
farm products at good prices.
Fifth--There are excellent means of trans
portation to the railway penetrating the cehtral portion of the county.
Sixth—There isan abundance of timber.
Seventh—There is an inexhaustible supply of pure water, both for irrigating and
domestic purposes.
Eighth—The temperature is mild, both in
summer and winter, andis not subject to
‘sudden changes.Ninth—The climate will compare favorably with that of any other section of the
Pacific Coast, even with the most fayored,
there being no malaria with its resulting
chills and fever, no viclent winds, no fogs, nor floeds. f
Tenth—The children reared in this climate and at this ‘altitude above the sea
usually. acquire better physical constituions, with more plumpness and firmness of
musoular developmeut as well as color and
vitality ofthe blood than those reared in
the°valley or even coast counties.
Witk this brief statement of facts, however, let it be understood _that.we de not
elaim for Nevada county that it is a paradise on earth, ner even the popular romance
of sub-tropical glories. :
Nevada county lies a little north of the’
eentral line of California, and_contains a
population of about 25,000. It extends
from the summit of the Sierra Nevada
mountains, on the east line of the State,
westward a distance of seventy miles to the
Sacramento Valley. It is from twelve to!
twenty miles wide, The altitude is from
two to three thousand feet along its central
portion and less than one thousand feet ejevation in the western or valley region. The
line of the Central Pacific Railroad” crosses
the. eastern boundary, and traverses the
southern portion of the eounty for many
miles. . It then enters Placer county, following close to the southern boundary of Nevada county. till near its.western limit. The
Nevada County Narrow Guage Railtoad con—
necta with the Central Pacific at Colfax and
extends thence gosth tthe eantral—portion
of the county, passing through Chicago
Park, Grass Valley, and terminating at
Nevada City—twenty-two miles from the
Central Pacific Overland Railroad. The
central portions. contain most of the rich
gold mines, including quartz, hydraulic and
placer mines together with, the upper portion of the Horticultural belt, while the
western or foothill region consists exclusively of agricultural andgrazing lands. The
horticultural and agricultural section of the
county comprises about 250,000. acres. of
land, a large per centage of which is adapted to cultivation. ‘The topograpy of the
county is such as to give variety to the pro
ducts. We grow successfully in Nevada
eounty: Oranges, lemons, citrons, figss,
olives, apricots, plums, straw berries, ‘black—
berries, raspberries, gooseberries, hazel nuts,
black walnuts, chestnuts, almonds, and
“every kind of vegetable grown.

eounty. There are five daily, one tri-weekly and three weekly newspapers published
in the county.
