Friday afternoon Herbert Cooper,
a Nevada City boy aged about seventeen years, met with a. painful accident at’ Town Talk, He had been
riding on a train coming this way,
and when it slacked up before entering the tunnel he alighted, running
along with it. He did not observe
tlie cattle-guard at the crossing, and
plunged into it, striking his stomach
against an iron brace. He was taken
into Mrs. Massie’s house in an unconscious condition, and upon partially
recovering Joseph Sims brought him
to his* home on Broad street. He is
confined to his bed, being very sore
and having to lie on his back. Dr.
Carl Muller who is attending him
says he is not dangerously hurt.

McKanlass is certainly a master of the

In himself he is worth the price of
admission. But he is supported by a

that kept the evening full of hilarity
and genuine enjoyment.”
A Prompt Response.
On March 13th Chas. McElvey sent
to the Postmaster-General through
Senator Hearst a petition asking for an
increase of mail service between this
city and the townsof Washington and

informing him that (as has already
been stated in this paper) tle increase
to six mails,a week had been ordered

Queer Fits and Starts.
The fits and starts—using these
words in their literal. meaning—of the
nervous people often strike the beholder as ludicrous. The nerves of
hearing of such unfortunates are painfully acute, and impingéd by abrupt,
unexpected noises, lead them sometimes to perfrom antics worthy of a
jumping-jack, Atthe root of nervousness, in most instances, is non-assimilation ofthe food, and consequently
innutrition of the nervesas the other
tissues ofthe body, This prolonged is,
of course, productive of serious nervous
disease. The remedy is Hostetter’s
Stomach Bitters, that invigorates the
stomach and enables it to perform its
functions properly. Soon after commencing a course of it, it. will. be
found ‘that the nerves grow more
tranquil by day, nightly repose
becomes less interrupted, and appetite more vigorous and satisfying.
These are the initial indications, followed by the complete restoration. of
nervous vigor. The bitters also cure
fever and ague, liver complaint and
constipation.

Napoleon’s Appreciation” and What Niebuhr Said of Him.

Seldom are the whirligigs of time and
the strange revenges which they bring

master,
From 1800 to 1814 the inflexible Republican had held studiously aloof from
the imperial regime. He would ‘have
absolutely nothing to do with Napoleon;
80.long as the Ceesar was prosperous and
eis hoc He had voted against the
oundation of the Legion-of Honor, he
voted against the consulate for lite,
and he -was the only member of the
Tribunate who dared to raise his voice
against the establishment of the empire.
Yet so highly did Napoleon appreciate
the talents and the virtues of the soldicr,
statesman, and man of science, who had
served the Convention and the Directory
fo well, that he sent him this pithy but
comprehensive message : *
“Monsieur Carnot, anything you like,
gi like, and when you like.”
~emnany interesting vicissitudes as has the ;
arnot wanted and would accept nothing. When, however, political bankruptcy
had overtaken Napoleon in 1814, and
when his marshals and his courtiers
were deserting him en masse Carnot reappeared to offer, as he put it, a “sexagenarian arm” to the defeated and ruined
conqueror. ose
His services were gladly accepted, and
he was instructed to place Antwerp in a
state of defense, and it was not until he
had accomplished his task that it was discovered that the man who had “organ
ized victory” forthe Republican armies,
whose name was closely associated with
the creation of the Polytechnic Scl:ool,
the Institute, the Ecole Normale, and the
Bureau of Longtitudes, held no higher
grade than that of a major of engincers,
He had bestowed the very highest ranks
in the military service of hiscountry, but
he had forgotten his own claims, wid it
was only by seniority that he had risen
to the post of a “Chef de Bataillon.”
TYerhaps the finest tribute ever rendered to his character.was that paid by
the illustrious historian Niebuhr. “Carnot’”’ he said, “isin many respects the
greatest man of this century ; his virtues
are of an exquisite nature. My political
ideas differ from his, and my love for
him might seem an anomaly; but this
love exists, and if there remained to me
in the world only a single crust of bread
I should be proud to share it with Carnot. .

his long and useful life. As little could
he have reckoned that the Elysee, where
for the last time he had seen and conferred with Napoleon, would be the mansion assigned as a official residence to hig
descendant. .
When, however, the chronicle of this
chameleon-like structure is considered,
astonishment at its changes of occupants
is overcome by a conviction that there is
searcely anything in the way of muta_ bility that is not pogsible in that edifice
of many masters.
Early in the eighteenth century the
Regent Orleans begged from: the baby
Louis XV. a vast tract of land abutting
on the Chamys Elysees; and this property he presented to his friend Henry de

she executed a number of etchings in
