Progressive whist was played and nine tables were occupied, The rooms were beautifully decorated with chrysanthemums, roseé, carnations and ferns. Mrs. Wm. Giffin and W. D. Vinton won the first prize; Mrs. J. M. Hadley and G. J. Reetor, the second, and the “beoby prize” fell to Mrs. Belle Douglass and J. M. Hadley. ' At the conclusion of the game choice refreshments were served, and the object of the gathering was discussed in pleasing terms, Hon. E. M. Preston made some very appropriate remarks in praise of the special guests of the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Zeitler. Mr. Preston said among other things that they have been good entertainers in the past and it was, indeed; Sitting that a special token of esteem be extended to them. In regard to Mr. Zeitler, the speaker said that too much praise could not be given him. He took charge of the Champion about. fifteen years ago and through his untiring efforts he succeeded in placing it in the front rank, Teday the Ohampion group of mines are recognized in this State for their great prosperity. Aside from’ this, Mr. Zeitler has ever and anon been alive tothe welfare of Nevada Oity and its surroundings. Whenever the occasion presented itself he responded in a substantial and telliag manuer. The people of Nevada City greatly appreciate these commendable efforts, and will always hold Mr, Zeitler in the highest of esteem. Mr, Zeitler feelingly responded. He said that when he first visited this place he took a liking to Nevada City and its people. He went on to say that he has large interests in this county and he does not-intend to leave them for good. Other business affairs will require his attention away fora menth or six weeks, but he intends to return and spend most of his time in this city. After other short speeches cheers were given with a hearty will for Mr. and Mrs, Zeitler. Singing then followed, after which dancing was announced. The merry makers did not disperse until 2:80 o’cfock this morning, when they unanimously voted Mr. and Mrs. Oharles Griesel charming entertainers. San Francisco, March 5.—After continuing for ninejand. a half months, the strike of the ironworkers of this city, inaugurated on May 20th of. last year, to enforce a demand for a nine-hour day, came to a formal end today. Twothirds of the unions composing the Tron Trades Council have acted upon a recommendation made by that body last night advising that the strike be prosecuted no longer, and have voted to allow their members to return to their places at the forges and on the ships at the Union and Risdon Iren Works, the Dow Pump Works and other shipbuilding and machine yards. The strike which thus reaches a termination has-been the most prolonged and one of the most bitterly contested struggles in the industrial history of San Francisco. Efforts have been made by various labor leaders, conciliation committees and merchants to bring about an agreement between the union’ men and their former employers, but without avail, It appeared that the contest would-be interminable. Several times. it seemed that the men were about to break away, but they were held in line. It was. not until the National Civic Federation took the matter up that success was attained in effecting a settlement. The result was that -all the affiliated unions on strike were’ ealled together last night. The Iron Trades Council held a meeting early in the evening and decided to recommend to the unions to return to work. The proposition was generally discussed and several unions decided to press the strike no longer. Others have acted today. Men have been applying at the big fron works for positions today and many will be taken back to work at once, It is understood that the Scetts and the Risdon manegement have not pledged themselves to take back all their old employees, but that the genstated as rapidly as conditions will permit. To Taxpayers. The second installment of State and Oounty Taxes is now due, and taxpayers should attend to this matter without delay. The taxes will become delinquent en the 28th of April at 6 o'clock p. m. Five per cent. will be added on all unpaid texes after that time. The storm came from the southeast suddenly, and late in the afternoon it was central off the coast of Oregon.
