SERVED BY eee aes She stands without a peer and bids defiance, to all competitors. 1n the production of gold there is not a close or dangerous rival to wrest from her golden brow
the regal crest. In many matters of mod=

sets an example worthy of emulation by
other mining towns in the State which
seem to be less ambitious and progressive.
She controls her own water works, possome of the finest, public schools in
the State, has begua-to--improve and beautify her public thoroughfares by the process
of cement and uniform macadam and is
now on the eve of establishing an extensive sewer system that cannot fail to remove much of the doubt and infidelity
which now exist relative to the salubrious
and health-giving quality of her climate.
Grass Valley has indeed extricated herself
from the slough of siluranism in’ which
she found herself so strongly imbedded for
@ guarter of a century,
But what caused our sister city to wrest

Important measures of the Legislature are
forcing their way to’the front. Assemblyman J)wyer’s project of having a State
hospital in San Francisco is in shape
now, for it has been reported favorably by
the Ways and Means Committee and is assured of warm support on the floor. The
idea is to make the institution for those who
have not resided long enough in any part of
the State to entitle them to the privileges]
of the local establishments, and it is claimed
that such a hospital is an absolute necessity

AN ECLIPSE.
A Total Eclipse Visible to All This
Month.
The celestial stage this month will present
Diana playing a role in which she was once
accustomed to terrify mankind. And even
today the earth contains millions of Adam’s
descendants who look upon a total eclipse
of the moon with. awe and dread. But
knowledge does not diminish the interest of
such an event. It is a wonderful thing to
watch the shadow of our planet creeping
across the mountainous face of a globe
nearly 240,000 miles away.Fhe scale of
such a phenomenon is in itself imposing to
the imagination. And we like to see our
shadow reaching so far; it heightens our respect for the ball that casts it. There
should be a perceptible increase of human
dignity after an eclipse of the nioon. This
eclipse will occur on the night of Sunday,
the 10th, and will be visible throughout
most of the inhabited regions of the globe.
It should be remarked that the ordinary
observer igs not likely to notice the penumbral
phases and, putting the whole thing in a
nutshell, it may be said that the eclipse will
begin about 8:45 Pp. Mm. and end about 0:25.

Considerable prospecting has been done and

was, in fact, rock of substantial character,
not so rich but that it might reasonably be
expected to hold out. We understand
there is a good body of such ore.
