WEDNESDAY...March 7, 1900
CRUSHED 10 DEATH.
"The Untimely Bod of Walter: Tollam at
Fred Tellam has received a copy of
the Arizona Daily Orb, published at .
Bisbee, Arizona, which contains ’the account of bis son’s death, which has
heretofore been announced. The Orb
says: ee i
“Walter Tellman, # young man in the
employ of the Copper Queen company,
met his death early this morning, while
performing his duties at the smelter.
Tellam,-with a number of others, was
engaged in trying to remove the metal
that had gathered in the stack over one
of the coverters.
prying and hammering on the metul for
some time, but their efforts seem to
have been of no avail, Tellam, who.
had been prying with one of the bare,
dropped it and started to walk underneath the stack, when the metal gave
way, falling to the ground and burying
him underneath. The most of the
weight caught him on the chest and
stomach, crushing that portion of his
body flat. He lived only a few moments after the accident. The weight
of the metal that crushed him was in
the neighborhood of a ton and fell a
distance of from ten to twelve feet.
The deceased isa brother of Alfred
Tellam. the assayer, and came here
some six or eight months ago. He was
a young man of about 20 years of age,
and was of a quiet and unassuming nature. He had made a number. of
friends in this city, who were pained to
hear of h is untimely end.
UNNATURAL HUNGER.
A Sure Sign of Hidden Dyspepsia.
“Jt was necessary to eat dinner at 11
o’clock ,”(says Mrs. O. F. Ollman, 1131
Preston St. Rockford, Ill.,) “in order
to have strength to prepare the noonday meal for the family.
_“While I was drinking coffee I felt so
faint at 11 o’clock that I was unable to
proceed. with the work unless I had .
lunch. If I missed the 11 o’clock
meal, I was attacked with a severe sick
headache,
“My complexion at that time was a
sight, great blotches appearing on my
face, and I was so. nervous [ could
sleep but a few minutes at a time, and
_ would wake in the morning more tired
than when I went to bed.
“Our grocer called my attention one
day to Postum Céreal Coffee. This
I immedi-.
ately quit the use of coffee and took
up Postum having it prepared properly.
The change produced a remarkable result. Ina week or two [ was able to
leave off the 11 o’clock lunch and take
my dinner in the regular way with the
rest of the family. My blotchy complexion disappeared and a natural complexion took its place. Now I can go
from morning until night without a
meal, if I desire, and no headache or
inconvenience of any kind appears.
Lsleep sound asa baby, and my kidney trouble, which was more than
serious, has entirely disappeared.
“A lady friend was recommended to
try Postum, and a short time after,
told me she. was disgusted with it for
it had no taste. I asked her if she
boiled it carefully fifteen minutes after
the real bubbling commenced. © She
said no, and in reply to another question, said she used only one heaping
teaspoonful to the cup, I explained
to her that she must use two heaping
teaspoons to the cup and let it boil
Tong enough. The next time I saw her
she said she used postum regularly
and liked it very much indeed, and
that it had made a great change in her
health and the health of one or two
members of her family.”
It seems plain, from this experiment,
thet one is justified in the inference
that coffee is an actual poison to many
human beings, and sets up all sorts of
diseases. The remedy is plain enough,
—to abandon the coffee and use PosThe men had been .

Bat Glorious For the Sensational dJournIt seems to us that the San Francisco
papers have made and apparently ina very unnecessary hullaballo over the
suicide of the young girl, who committed suicide in that city, says the Appeal.
Of course her rash and wicked. act is to
be deplored, as are all such happenings.
The man alleged to have seduced the
dead girl, is to be denounced, as are all
rmen of his kind. But the country is
full of men and women like unto these
two. And San Francisco is particalarly cursed with more than her share
of this class of sinners. Suicide is
not an unfrequent occurrence among
them. And many are the other evils
which folléw in the wake of those who
indulge in this icensed life. So it
would be hard to account for the great
outcry which the city papers are mak‘ing over this particular case were it
not the fact that their love for sensationalism far exceeds any of their
other characteristics. The girl. may
have been more sinned against. than
sinful. We cannot speak as to this
special instance, but it is too well
known to merit more than casual mention that in cases of this kind it is not
the man who isalways at fault by a
gooddeal. Boys and young men who
live in cities are as often led astray by
women of the half word and supposedly respectable girls, as are maidens
started on the downward path by seducers. It is a bad business all
around andthe cure for the evil is not
to be found in big black type or in the
sermons of notoriety seaking preachers. The man who delivered the oration over.the remains of the dead girl
may have been sincere in his statement
but it he was he certainly betrayed a
strange understanding of the teachings
of the Master. Such blood-thirsty
talk and boasting muy be well enough
when given voiceto by men of the
world, but the minister of the Lord
Jesus Christ are in a bad busines when
they go about counseling wholesale
mutder.
This social evil, like poverty, will be
with us always. It can never be eradifore is' clean and bright. There are cated while human nature remains as
many other-reasons why you. should
it_is. The sin may be checked but
never killed. The payment of better
wages to working girls may in a mmeasure lessen the evil so far as they are
themselves concerned. It would. be
more effective however, were it not
that the love of money is not always
the cause of a young girl’s downfall.
The only remedy for meu who wander
like roaring lions over the earth seeking whom they may devour, is to treat
them like wild animals—uniess they
are young enough to be tamed. The
most effective salvation for girls,
however, is to be found in the home
influences which should be thrown
around them. Let parents do their
duty, let brothers and sisters join
hands, and the chances again the
girls of the family falling by the wayside will be wonderfully diminished.
The manner in which the girl’s: death
has been exploited, through, by the
city dailies is much more likely to increase than to check this deplorable
manner of life—and probably may
influence other unfortunates to imita e
the dead girl’s suicide.
