Meant $9, enough for Bob to pay. But
what does the foolish fellow do?
“He sees some extra long stemmed
ones standing In a vase near by, and
he prices those. ‘One dollar and &
quarter apiece,’ says the man. Bob is
feeling very generous that day. Hig.
allowance has just come in. ‘Give me
a dozen of those instead of the cheap

“That night he calis on the girl to see
the effect his present has made. She
hasn’t received the flowers* yet. They
come while he is there. This just suits
him, because he will be able to see the
expression of astonishment on her face,
She opens the box; sees Bob’s card
and lifts up the roges with a cry of rapture and an ‘Oh, Mr. Wentworth, how
sweet of you!’ Then she looks around
everywhere for a vase tall enough. You
see, she Basn’t any of those that stand
on the floor, but only an ordinary
chrysanthemum jar. She takes that
down and measures the flowers, then
she lays them on the table, and with
one skillful whack of ‘her little pearl
handled khife she chops off half the
length of the stems. Bob says it turned him cold to see §6 go into the wastebasket like that. We say at home it
serves him right.”—New Yor Herald.

4 celebrated but very vain and over
Dearing French painter in Paris had a
pet dog that was taken ill, and he had
the audacity to send for one of the
leading physicians in the capital, on
the assumption that a veterinary sur.

himself.
The physician who had been honored
with the summons was at first petrtfed at the Impertinence of the notion
but soon recovered his equanimity and
ceturned the following message to the
knight of the brush:
“Would M. M— be good enough to
step over to my house, as 1 have a

A Bone “Library.”
There is a lending library of human
bones in London. It is intended for the
use of medical students, and the bones . ff
are lent out im exactly the same manner as books from a circulating library.
The entire collection ts valued at £5,000
and contains besides human bones the
skeletons of horsés, dogs, cits, oxen
and sheep—all animals that the veterinary surgeon is likely to be called up. 1 once had a conversation, sald un.
