a thousand pounds.
The new cards are stamped with the Jef-],
ferson head and are five and one-half inches’
long and three and one-half inches wide.
They are smaller than. the ‘‘Jumbo’’ card,
and are of a convenient medium size. They
have not been placed onsale yet and will
not be until the stock of old cards is exbausted, Hereafter there will only be this one
size issued. The San Francisco Postoffice
sells nearly 7,000,000 cards annually.
A Poor Woman’s_ Appeal.
Appast: Mrs. Hill, a recent arrival from
Nevada City, appeared before the Board of
Supervisors yesterday morning to ask for assistance for herself and her two orphan children. She stated that she resided in Smartaville several years ago.
The Supervisors were of the opinion that,
State, andasked Mr.Lewek to provide board
and lodging for the family for a few days. .
Since Mrs. Hill’s arrival in Marysville she
has been allowed to remain at the U. 8,
Hotel, although ‘the proprietor was ware
that she had no money. She has called on
as well as of the Catholic Ladies’ Relief Society. Those ladies would have placed the
children in an orphan asylum, but she does
not want to part with them. It is impossible for a woman to get work on aranch at
the present time, and the relief gocie ties are
not oyerburdened.with money.

Married“Last Night.
Thad Sigourney of this city and Miss
Olivia Wilder of Grass Valley were united
in-marriage last evening, the wedding tak+
father, Simeon R. Wilder, on Mill street,
Grass Valley. Rev. J. Sims of this city
perfornied the ceremony. Miss Marcia
Hager and Mr. R. T. Morrison, both of
this city, stood up with the happy couple,
A number of in timate friends were present,
and the bride was the recipient of. numerous
handsome gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Sigourney
have the congratulations of all their acquaintances, and the Transcrirr wishes
them ‘abundant happiness and prosperity,
They will reside in this city, the groom
having a house all ready to move into on
Coyote street.
It Is Just So.
There is a great deal of truth in the following from the Mining and Scientific Press;
‘+A San Francisco paper is cenducting a popular contest to ascertain which county has)
the best mineral exhibit at the Midwinter
Fair. The trouble with this sort of contest
is that it determines nothing, and the county
having the finest exhibit may or may not
secure the award. The issue depends upon
the numbers and energy of the friends of the
several counties. If they ‘rustle,’ they secure more ‘coupons’ than others. That is
all there is to it.”

‘i Hydraulic
Process.
Ata meeting of the California Debris Commission Wednesday permits to mine by the
hydraulic progress were granted in respect
to five mines near Brownsville, Yuba county.
The permits and location of mines-are as folfows: Crane Brothers, mine at Sharon Valley; J. M. Wetmore, Herring Ravine mine;
Fausteno Campo,.Campo mine; D. ‘W.
Albert, Union mine and James Gordon,
Motor mine.
These are all small mines, and collectively
their operations, would not equal in magnicould be named, such as the North Bloomfield or Excelsior.
Application forpermits have been wade
to the Commission by the owners of Spring
Gulch mine, near San Andreas, Green
near Glencé, Calaveras
county, the Grub Flat, Badger Hill and
Indian Hill mines, in Plumas county, the
Spanish Hill Hydraulic, Spanish Hill Gravel,
near Placerville, and the other mines in that
neighborhood.
Restraining works have been erected in
the Kate Hayes inine,—a—large-property—at
Frencn Corral, and the mine is now ready
for inspection by the Commission. This is
one of the largest mines that has so far come
under the authorityof the Commission.
Oe
Still at It.
At the present session of the Board of
they are still allowing $200 per month for
the spy work that .is being done in the
hydraulic mining sections of the State.
These spies come to this section very. often,
put up at the best hotels and splurge
around just enough to make a showing of
earning their salaries. In their report they
say that the Manzanita and the Kate Hays
mines, in Bridgeport township, this county,
are hydraulicking in violation of law. We
do not believe anything of the kind. Major
Heuer, one of the United States Debris
Commissioners, infermed the editor of this
paper that these two companies were complying with the law and that permits would
be granted them te continue their hydraul=
icking. This shows the unreliability of the
paid spies. Re
The Mineral Exhibit.

ahead of Nevada. If the people: of this
county manifested one-half the interest in

best mineral exhibit, which is from Nevada
county, cute no figure inthe matter; it is
the rustling for votes. El Dorado is trading

very fine costumes ‘will be worn, as well as
lots of comic ones. The prizes offered are
valuable and the efforté@\made to win them

Goyne’s orchestra will furnigh music. All

MINING SALE.
The Normandy Mine Sold to a
Chicago Syndicate.
Telegraph: The Normandy mine, owned
by Messrs. Sennechal and Richards and
located on Deadman’s Flat has been sold to
the Gold Trust and Development Company
of which Dr. Stephen H. Emmens, the
eminent chemist and lecturer is at the head.
There has been but little work done on the
gold bearing ledge in the shaft and there
has been a great amount of gold taken from
the surface surrounding the ledge. The
company that has bought the claim have
ample means-and-are going to work it_immediately.
gineer' and is manager of the Mayflower
mine in Amador county, and -also of the
Chicago Gold Mining Syndicate. It will be
but a short time until Deadman’s Flat will
enjoy a boom.
Mr. Frank Dulmaine will have full.chargeof the affairs at the mine and he informs us
that very extensive hoisting and pumping
machinery will be erected just as soon as
the lumber and other necessary machinery
Dulmaine will give the business his entire attention and in him the company have secured a
faithful and competent man, :

A Good Idea.
Supervisors Buffington and Donnelly . are
spending all the money they can possibly
spare from their respective road funds to
keep the Grass Valley turnpike in good
condition.. But yet there are not funds
enough that can be devoted to it to make
the road what it should be. On account of
this state of affairs several of our citizens
tion be gotten up in this city and Grass
Valley to-raise_a good fund for this purpose,
which they believe can be done after the
present local dances, shows, etc., are over
with. It is thought $500 or $600 could be
raised in this way, as scarcely any one
would refuse to buy a ticket, whether they
attended theperformances or not, and that
amount could be expended to good advantige ona road—which-is-traveled-more than
any other one in the county.

Deafness Cannot be Cured
San Francisco,
oe
By local ‘applications as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear. There
is only one way to. cure deafness, and. that
is by constitutional remedies, Deafness is
caused by an inflamed condition of the
mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube.
When this tube is inflamed you have a
rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and
when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the
result, and unless the inflammation, can be
taken out and this tube restored to its
normal condition, hearing will be destroyed
forever ; nine cases out of ten are caused by
catarrh, which is-nothing but an inflamed
condition of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for
any case of Deafness. (caused by catarrh)
