Samuel Butler and P. G. Scadden, notwithstanding the long continued spell of stormy weather which these gentlemen have contended with since they entered upon this important work. From the success and encouragement that the collectors have already met with there is every reason for the assurance that Nevada County’s exhibit at St. Louis will be second to none from any other county in the State and will constitute the best effort that the people of this section have ever made toward advertising the unlimited and varied resources to the outside world. It is the intention of those in charge to get a $10,000 exhibit which will be complete in every respect and will be rep resentative of the industries of the county. As is to be expected, the minerals will predominate in our exhibit, which is right and proper and the most appropriate display fora Nevada county to make, having led the State in the produc— tion of gold for over fifty-four years. In order to make the exhibit complete and representa— tive the co-operation of everyone is solicited and it must be had to be successful. Mine managers will have the satisfac— tion of knowing that however valuable their contributions to the exhibit may be, they will be perfectly secure. The entire exhibit will be insured against burglary, so that in case anything is stolen the value of it will be returned in money. This is something that has never before been done and should prompt mining companies to put forth their best efforts. In addition to this the Commissioner will have to give a $10,000 bond to the Supervisors and the Promotion Committee which will fully cover’ whatever loss might occur through him, should any occur. This also is without precedent and should bea guarantee of good faith. The collection of a proper exhibit will take considerable time and lish, French and other nations do. take anything except advice. Three years ago Senator Beveridge traveled all through Mancharia, Si beria and Ruesia. Being interviewed by our Washington correspondent he says: ‘The Russian has immense staying qualities. He can live on a small amount of plain food. He can endure enough exposure and hardship to kill most men for he has a deep chest, broad shoulders and stout legs, and appears to be almost without nerves. He believes in the future destiny of his country as the one designated by the Almighty forthe redemption of the world. Like the Boer he prays and sings as he fights, and, being a fatalist, is as formidable as Cromwell’s trooper. And there are millions of him. Osan Japan stand up for any great length of time against ench an antagonist? I think not,” Yet Russia complains that weare hostile. Appoint Committee. The trustees of the Methodist church: at this city held a special meeting last night to appoint a building committee to take charge of the matter of giving out contracts for the proposed repair work and improvements to the church property. E. J. Morgan, B. F. Snell and O. R. Marchie were appointed as this committee and given fall power to act. Ed J. Morgan was elected treasurer of the committee, and all money subscribed for the repairs of the church should be paid to him at his office in the Citizens Bank and he will receipt for the same, Atthe meeting of the Trustees last night it was announced that all bills against the charch had been paid in fall to date. The Rainfall. Last night the downpour was qaite heavy and at anearly hour this mornlabor and it is hoped that every mine manager will contribute promptly and liberally when called upon by the collectors. This is Nevada county’s golden opportunity, therefore let us make the best showing in the way of a World’s Fair exhibit that can possibly be made. Without doubt, this exhibit is going to prove the best advertisement that Nevada county has ever offered of its resources, and the most productive of desired results, too. a@#e24e46444 579 4 @ ITS VIRTUES OVERESTIMATED FTYHE wonderful sew element radium, brief as has been wi. the time since its discovery, has already established a reputation of which any of the older elements might well be proud. Diseases hitherto considered incurable have surrendered to it without a struggle, if some of the experimenters can be believed; germs become panic stricken at its approach and fly before it; cancer need no longer be dreaded; dyspepsia, sometimes called the national American disease, yields at once to the treatment with what is poetically called “liquid sunshine”; the blind are made to see, the deaf to hear, andeven the negro may become white and the leopard lose his spots. One of the most interesting of all the radium cures is that reported by a Parisian doctor who by its use succeeded in introducing harmony into a family from which it had long been absent. Speaking to a reporter, the doctor said “Radium was also tried with success on a male patient who suffered from strange sonambulistic attacks, during which he would get up, maltreat his wife, and break everything within ~ reach. ‘Then he would leave the house and roam about the streets for twc-2r three hours, at the end of which time he would return home, go to bed, fall asleep again. So frequent did these violent fits become that his wife left him. He came to me, andI treated him with radium for twelve days. tell me that the affliction from which he formerly suffered had gone and that they were living together agaiv,” _ The story told in this particular case may be entirely new element will:perform a like service in many families where it is needed; but in the great majority of cases the reported cures are undoubtedly untrue, The new element has many rémarkable properties—properties that the scientists cannot explain, but there is a limit to its powers; it is not omnipotent. The doctors believe it will doa great work and be found to be most useful, but even the most sanguine among them has no hope that it will do a tithe of the things claimed for it. ‘ ing this section was visited by a hail storm. This forenoon it rained heavily at Spells and the sun shone out for a short while at mid-day. Shortly after two o’clock this afternoon more hail fell and rain followed. The clerk of the weather seemas to be puzzled as to when a fine spell is due, and from all indications it is quite far distant. The average rainfall here is fifty-six inches for the season, bat it now looks as though the present one will exceed the record of several years. They organized in bunches and repeated with as much cheerfalness as if they were voting at aclub election. Some of them voted as many as six times. Not satisfied with repeating so often and so gaily, they stuffed the ballot box by way of showing themselves capable of keeping up their end in doing practical politics. This is rather dashing to the hopes of those who expected that woman suffrage would purify politics. So far from elevating political morals, the enfranchisement of women has had a bad effect on the morals of women. They have resorted to fraud with an effrontry that astounds even the most hardened of male politicians. They stand in no fear of the law,and regard tbe violation of a statute as lightly as if they were changing 4 skirt pattern. Apparently they have not the least idea that legal penalties wili be inflicted on them—and their reasoning in this particular appears to be perfectly sound.
