Explosion of Giant Powder Caps at the Gold Ridge Mine, Richard Phelan, Superintendent of the Gold Ridge mine, which is situated on the headwaters of the Middle Yuba river, in the extreme uppér part of this county, arrived here on the Downieville stage today, bringing with him news of a terrible -accident which happened at the above mine last Thursday night. George Dey and John Rennie were on the afternoon shift and went ‘to the mouth of the tunnel to get powder and fuse to charge holes that they had drilled. Both men went into the building Where the powder was stored and Dey began capping the fuse. While thus engaged -one of the caps exploded, causing several other caps in a box to explode. The force of the explosion tore a hole six inches across through the two-inch plavk top of the work bench, but strange as it may seem, a full box of giant powder which rested upon the betich not ‘more than a foot away was not exploded. The buildcontained a ton of powder, Both men were thrown —dewn: by the concussion, The explosion was heard by the men at the boarding house and they hurried to the scene. Dey and Rennie were found to Le terribly bruised and cut, the former having one hand nearly torn off and suffering from an ugly wound in the groin, The latter was ° ut about the face with the flying fragments of copper of which the caps are made, Both eyes were seriously injured and he was otherwise hurt. Messengers were at once sent to the Knglish Mountain mine, four or five miles distant, after Dr. Peckham, the resident physician, Owing to the fact that the snow is trom 12 to 16 feet deep,, the physician deemed it advisable to have the injured men brought to the English Mountain mine, Superintendext Keniston sent four of his nien to the Gold Ridye to assist in bringing the wounded men over, Dey was taken first, on a sled made for the purpose, sthe men working in relays so as to relieve one another, “Dey died about seven hours after the accident and not long after arriving at English»Mountain, An artery in the groin had been severed, Rennie was taken to the English” Mountain mine yesterday. His injuries will not prove fatal, but it is feared thst he will lose one eye, Superintendent Phelan leaves here tonight for San Francisco to notify the owners of ° developments have been made there, 'A Pleasant Place Where Infectious _ Diseases Are Treated. __The City Council of Glasgow, Scotland, Possess a humanitarian sense of duty worthy of emulation by the governing bodies of all large cities. Like most metropolitan cities throughout the world, Glasgow possesses a pest-house. But the surrounding of this pest-house.and-the conditions of life inside it are entirely different from those of any similar institution in other countries. Instead of giving it, the appearance of a horrible, repulsive place with high, grim walls,-only fit to die in, it is made so attractive that rich and poor alike avail themselves of the opportunity of entering it when stricken down with disease. — In 1892, 5,282 infectious cases were treated within the wails of this institution, Dr. Atbert Shaw, in-bis-work nicipal Government in Great Britain,” says: On the extreme western edge of the city was a private estate;called Belvidere, containiug rather more than forty acres, and sloping beautifully down tothe Clyde. It was purchased and the mansion ‘house was enlarged and transformed into quarters for attendant physicians and nurses. Wards were hastily built of wood, in the detached pavilion form, These have been gradually replaced by permanent pavilions of brick aut$tone, each containing two wards. The establishment is now the most attrative and complete in its appointments and in adaption to its particular purposes, and the most satisfactorily administered, .of any in the United Kingdom, if not inthe world, It has 1,000 patients, without overorowding the spacious wards.” accommodations for Compare this humane system ing disease-stricken people in Glasgow with the description of the San Francisco pesthou-e as it appeared in the Examiner a few days ago:. **The squalor of the neighthe ugly marsh, the sewerstained sloughs, all set off the rugged old building. The rickety old barn must be recking with bacilli. It has stood there thirty years, through all sorts of epidemics, with the vapors from the ‘reeking swamps borhood, ‘mingling with the odors of disinfectants and the ooze gatheritig about the rotten boards until the verandas are green with MOS8¢ Che inside of the lepers’ homemust'’ be’ ‘no more inviting than the exterior, ‘The worn, warped floors are bare, the walls are bare, except for a few old advertising chromos and tobacco labels that the unfortunates have atuck upthere. The rooms are like jail cells, except that they are not rainproof or mud-proof,” The contrast is so striking that comment withheld. If the pesthouse at San francisco-is the*-horrible pen they depict, it is high time some steps were taken to provide for a more humane treatment of unfortunate enough to be confined there than they now can scarcely be those who are receive, A rigid investigation of the condition of this institution should be made and the necessary remedies applied, +-0@e-+ = Congregational Church, There will be preaching at the above church as usual, both morning and even— ing, by the pastor, Rev. J. Sims, Subject of discourse in the morning—“A Remedy for Distressing Thoughts.” In the even: ing—‘*Hunting and Dividing the Game,” a sermon to young men, Sabbath school at the close of the morning service, Kverybody cordially invited, new editor, A, W, Bishop, remarks: ‘There will be a new mining boom now that the Legislature has passed the Dill providing for an appeal in The miners will no lopger be harrassed by arcontempt cases, rests, and a hundred mines will be turning out bullion that. have lain idle for years, It will benefit every industry in the State. -~—even the farmer will have occasion to rejoice, as the mining camps will furnish a home market for their productions,” ia apeaareeee eens A Good Suggestion. In speaking of the high-hat ordinance and the anti-cigarrette law, an exchange remarks: The Legislature will not have done-its full duty bythe people—if -itadjourns without making it a misdemeanor to chew gum, 7 eOe-+Sulphurets.
