The New Klondike.
Messrs. Webb, Berriman & Co, have
commenced operations’ on a body’ of
gravel situated just above the Federal
Loan mine. They have laid a track of
T rails from it to Deer creek—a distance of about 100 feet—where it will
' be slniced. The company has named
the diggings the New Klondike, and
have implicit faith that it will turn out
enough of the yellow metal to be worthy
of i the title bestowed upon it.

was in town, today. He says that if

Howard Makes A Another Start.

Dickie Jose Still Singing.
Last evening’s G. V. Telegraph says:
Dickie Jose, who made his first appearance as a singer with Birch and Cotton’s minstrels, is now playing an’ engagement at the Orpheum theater, San

for them.
Jose, who is a Qprnishman, was-a
blacksmith in Reno when Ben Cotton
join his company. This was about
thirteen years ago and since then he
has sung in some of the finest companies of America and is famous everywhere. There are somé people in Grass
Valley who contemplate going to San
Francisco to hear Jose and his singers.
He has a voice of marvelous sweetness.
Another Old-Timer Dies.
W. D. Tisdale who died at Los Gatos
Monday evening of kidney disease was
a-well known citizen here during: the
sixties. He was interested in the Banner mine.

The widow of Mr. Tisdale is a niece
of Mrs. George F. Jacobs of this city.
A Fatal Illness.

Queen Victoria. Has a Cold,

but apparently she is only suffering
from a slight cold. The report'on the
stock exchange that international complications have caused the departure
of her Majesty caused a brief semipanic in the consol market.

defense bill, carrying an appropriation
of $50,182,000, this morning passed the
