Sagara, + Pp ai _ ee oe pam 5 JETT. a etn eer iterate aa et A SE A TE Ae DEO pie ening a. —Wh Daily Weiript. at of the country are doing valuable service to farmers, and that is in the line of thinking, studying and experimenting for themselves. Prof. Johnson, of the Connecticut State Experiment Station, stated at the recent farmers’ convention that it was gratifying to mark the progress that had been made among farmers in the last twenty-five years. That.whereas at one time talk upon fertilizers and feedie ing rations was as Greek almost to the average farmer, he can to-day talk intelligently upon. these subjects, and discuss them with credit to himself. i cause the farmer has actual practice j ; to deal with, and it is frequently the case that scientific theory requires some modification in -order to correspond with practice; and the intelligent farmer who understands scientific declarations, and can judge of the causes and results which he obtains, can not only adopt any particular mode of procedure to the necessities of the case, but-can also point out the probable point in which science is inpiece a correctly interpreted. = . § For some time there have been 5 tables in existence arranged by the : German scientists in the course of ; ‘ their experimentation, giving the ee amount of. manurial substances taken a5) from the soil by average crops of varieo ous kinds. By these it appears that PG ¢ oe phosphoric acid is quite largely reoe ; quired in the production of grain; ; = that is, the tables shéw a considerabiy larger proportion of phosphoric acid = straw, with the exception of -corn, bap se ay where the percentage of phosphoric : ‘~+ acid inthe grain is given as five and nine-tenths, and of corn-stalks as five and three-tenths, and in buckwheat, : where the grain has five and seven@ ee tenths and the straw six and one; > : tenths; the other grains range from over five to nearly twelve, with a range of two to three and five-tenths th Fes 4 is yet difficult to determine, but there : is an experiment with regard to corn 1 that seems to denote a limit to the tet : value of phosphoric acid for the pro-! Ina held that had not been cropped forsome time, with the exception of the previous year to buckwheat, the soil was supplied with an amount of nitrogen and potash estimated to be sufficient for the production of an average crop of corn, the nitrogen in : the form of sulphate of ammonia, and a potash as high grade muriate, being : spread broadcast after the ground was plowed, and well harrowed in. Upon one section of one-sixteenth of an acre dissolyed bone black was employed at 4 the rate of two hundred and fifty-six : Roma = : pounds per acre, another with nothi noe ing, another with double the quantity j of bone black, and still another with n . Thenothing plots were nearTy eical in their :, d, giving only ¢ asmall quantity of grain, as well as 7 small stalks, but fhere were some peculiar features with the other two = plots. Theone with the lesser quantity of the bone black, which contained the element phosphoric acid, gave a good development of stalks, while they produced well-developed and wellcured ears of corn, many stalks furnishing two ears perfectly capped over. In the case of the larger quantity of phosphoric acid there was a 2 considerably inereased growth of Eo stalks, being in the proportion of mie 5267.2 for an acre to 3745.6 of the former quantity, while the yield of ears of corn was actually less; the ears were somewhat larger, but scarcely a stalk had two ears, and the was 8787.2 to 3902.4 of ths former. This would seem to in. dicate that so far as the chemical use of ec acid is concerned there isa limit in grain production, and that beyond that point it only serves to give an increase of fodder, the economy of which is questionable —W.
