T I8 INTERESTING to note that the Congressional delegations of four
. of the original thirteen States are exactly the same as they were when
the first Congress assembled. In 1789 the House of Representatives contained sixty-five members. Of these Virginia sent ten, Maryland six, Connecticut five and and Delaware one. The Virginia delegation was the largest of.
any State, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania having sight each and New York
After the lapse of 114 years, the House of Representatives contains 688
members and Virginia occupies fourteenth place, along with three other
States; two of which were not then admitted. The two States of New York
and Pennsylvania combined have sixty-nine representatives, or four more than
the total membership of the first House. = =»
After the first census apportionment in 1790, Virginia had nineteen, Maseschusetts fourteen, Pennsylvania thirteen and New York and North Carolina
ten each. North Carolina bas ten now. Delawate has never had bat one. If
she had not been shern of. -Weet Virginia, the Old Dominion would have
fifteen Representatives out of 886 instead of nineteen she had in a total membership of 105.
In the firet Congress that assembled after the apportionment of 1790, the
seven Southern States had forty-eight Representatives in the House out of 105
and fourteen Senators out of thirty, Kentacky and Vermont having been admitted into the Union. The next State te be admitted was Tennessee, which
gave the South exactly half the Senate.. Maine. begenwith -seven-in 1810 and
has dropped down to four, The State’e population has increased but little
_ since 1850.
_...New England has twenty-nine Representatives in the first apportioned
Congress. She will have precigely twenty-nine Representatives in the next
Congress, a.striking coincidence. Here again is illustrated the decline in the
political power of some of the original thirteen States, With twenty-nine
representatives New England had in the House between 1790 and 1800, more
than one-fourth the strength, but her twenty-nine now constitates leas than
one-thirteenth of that body. Georgia began with two and now has eleven, and
so has made & relative gain.

Fa Tis enon,
The life of another one of our stardy
miners wascrushed ont this afternoon.
Shortly after dinner William Henry
Walters had just returned to bis work
in the breast of the Canfield gravel

caved away and completely buried the
unfortanate man.
His fellow miners immediately went
to work to resuce their comrade, but
up to the time the Transonier went to

Mrs. Katherine Thayer-Tuttle, wife

she resided all winter at the National

Mrs. Tuttle’s girlhood days were
spent in the South, where she biossomed into womanhood and became a
general favorite with all whom she
came in contact, In 1862 she was united in the holy bonds of matrimony in
Cleveland, Ohio, to George R. Tattle,
present general manager ef the Golden
Gate mine, and the union has proved.
® most happy one of over forty years,
despite the fact that the lady bad been
an invalid for twenty-five years. The
best of medical ald had been enlisted
to alleviate ber sufferings, but all to
no avail, and she was compelled to bear:
ber affliction, which she did with a
fortitude and resignation that was
commendable. A milder climate being best adapted to her malady they
came to Oslifornia thirteen years ago
and five years ago took up their abode
in Gregs Valley, where Mr. Tattle bas
been largely interested in mining,
ranch fn Penn Valley, of which bis
father was manager, and known to almost every one in that section of the
county.
Mr. Walters was a quiet, unassuming man, and deeply attached to his
family, He wasa friend to every one
and an enemy to none. His many
friends speak of his worth as a man in
the highest terms, who extend their
slacere sympathy to the afflicted ones
in this, their greatbereavement,
He was a steady, industrious man,
always ready and willing to labor to
provide comforts for his wife and little ones, who are now left alone in this
cold and dreary world without the pro

Deceased was a native of California

REDDING, Shasta county, March 9th.—The stage running from here to
Keswick and carrying eight men bound for the Iron Mountain mine to fill the
places of union men, who have tied up the works, was held up four miles west
of this place today by twenty five armed strikers. The men aboard were compelled to alight, after which they were forced to march back one mile to Middle Creek Station, where they were put aboard a train and warned that if they
again attempted to down the workingmen in that section, retribution swift and
sure would overtake them. Sheriff Richardson, as soon as put in receipt of the
sensational hold-up, swore in a large force of deputies and is hurrying them
to the acene of trouble. The excitement is intense, as the strikers are in an
ugly frame of mind and it is thought that if the deputies attempt to molest
them in any way they will precipitate a conflict with them, which would ultioe
