Piiaie cla ccas Zé T I8 INTERESTING to note that the Congressional delegations of four . of the original thirteen States are exactly the same as they were when the first Congress assembled. In 1789 the House of Representatives contained sixty-five members. Of these Virginia sent ten, Maryland six, Connecticut five and and Delaware one. The Virginia delegation was the largest of. any State, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania having sight each and New York After the lapse of 114 years, the House of Representatives contains 688 members and Virginia occupies fourteenth place, along with three other States; two of which were not then admitted. The two States of New York and Pennsylvania combined have sixty-nine representatives, or four more than the total membership of the first House. = =» After the first census apportionment in 1790, Virginia had nineteen, Maseschusetts fourteen, Pennsylvania thirteen and New York and North Carolina ten each. North Carolina bas ten now. Delawate has never had bat one. If she had not been shern of. -Weet Virginia, the Old Dominion would have fifteen Representatives out of 886 instead of nineteen she had in a total membership of 105. In the firet Congress that assembled after the apportionment of 1790, the seven Southern States had forty-eight Representatives in the House out of 105 and fourteen Senators out of thirty, Kentacky and Vermont having been admitted into the Union. The next State te be admitted was Tennessee, which gave the South exactly half the Senate.. Maine. begenwith -seven-in 1810 and has dropped down to four, The State’e population has increased but little _ since 1850. _...New England has twenty-nine Representatives in the first apportioned Congress. She will have precigely twenty-nine Representatives in the next Congress, a.striking coincidence. Here again is illustrated the decline in the political power of some of the original thirteen States, With twenty-nine representatives New England had in the House between 1790 and 1800, more than one-fourth the strength, but her twenty-nine now constitates leas than one-thirteenth of that body. Georgia began with two and now has eleven, and so has made & relative gain.
