His clutch set the wheela in motion, and the meat-cutter chopped his head off as neatly as if it had been built for a guillotine. TO “THE PUBLIC: J. A. Northway and. A. W. Morris are the new proprietors of the Union Hotel, being the successors of the late firm of Northway & Bodewig. These gentlemen have formed a co-partnership and will hereafter couduc: the house as a strictly first-class hotel. Mr Northway herewith returns his sincere thanks to the patrons of the old firm, and both gentlemen solicit a share of the public’s patronage for the new. Every attention will be shown the traveling public. New and important improvements have been made in the hotel ‘and grounds, and tourists will find it the most healthful]. as well as comfortable hotel in the mountains. ‘ J. A. Norruway, A. W. Morris. Ice! Ice! The Union Ice Company is now prepared to deliver ice in quantities to suit to any part of the city. Orders left at the Ice House, on the Plaza, will be promptly attended to. al3 THERE is more Catarrh in this section of the country than all other diseases put together, and until the last few years wassupposed to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by. ¢onstantly failing to cure with local treatment pronounced it incurable. Science has proven catarrh to be a constitutional diseare and therefore requires constitutional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional .enre on the market. It is taken internally in doses from 10 drops to a steaspoonful, It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the syetem. Telegraph: In-a conversation with R. D. Waggoner, superintendent of -the Granite Hill mine, he informed us that a contract had just been let for sinking the shaft 100 feet trom the 400. Mr. Waggoner also ivformed ‘us that the ledge was looking very well indeed in the bottom and that a crushof 100 tons of ore would be immediately put through the Crown Point mill. “The company, and in fact all who are acquainted with the Granite Hill, have great confidence in its future. His. Vote. ____. ' George Walkington tells the — Wash., Linesia i in 1860. “I was living then in Clinton, Henry county, Mo.” he said, “and each voter had to ‘tall out ‘the name of the person he voted for. Only three persons in the precinct veted for Lincoln and I was one of them, I can take ny Republicanism in pretty strong doses these times, and rather like it that way.” + -@e Will Locate in Grass Valley. The Telluride (Col.) Journal of Saturday April 21st, says: Dr. J. W. Brown and wife left Wednesday morning for Grass Valley, California, and we are sorry to state that they have about decided to locate there permanently. The doctor and his estimable wife will be sadly missed in Telluride. Tdebilitated system I ever used.” Growths Upon the Slickens. Oroville Register: We hope every dry land farmer-in the county will read this littls item given to us by P. H. Chivell, whose home is near Nelson: He owns 320 acres on the eust side of the Spring Valley Comgated. He raises a crop of clover hay, which averages him from two to three tons per agre. After the hay is .off the ground he floods the land and plants a crop of corn, Last year hé planted his corn on the 16th day of July yet had an excellent ‘crop. . He says he fealizes @re profit from the fortytive acres of irrigated land than he does from the remaining acres of his farm. He fattens his hogs and other stock from the hay and corn and thus sells them to advantage. Healso adds that the forty-five acres gives more labor than the other 275 acres. The slickens’are from one to three feet deep. He says this land holds moisture well, better if anything than the adohe. He thinks the finest grain in the county is some owned by Senator Shippee which is on the slickens land west of the canal. We asked Mr. Chivell if others in the vicinity irrigated their lands and he said no, yet there is: a strip about two mile wide by eighteen miles “[Tong that could be irrigated if the canal car= ried sufficient water. With water he grows the very finest fruits of all kinds on the slickens lands and the vegetables cannot be excelled. == ee PREVENTION 18 better. than-etire, and—you may prevent that tired feeling by taking .
