LOCALS IN BRIEF.
Summarized Mention of Minor Home
Happenings.
Hous:-cleaning is the ordersof the day
all over town.
Conrad Grisse] is having his-residence on
Coyote street repaired and improved. « A
bay window will be built.on.
. The new concrete walk to “be laid down
on Commercial street will include the walk
in front of the establishment of J: J. =
son.
John Mosby, for many years a resident
ef North San Juan, died at the County
Hospital this morning, aged sixty-seven
years. ae i
Next Thursday will be the last day for
Chinamen to register. We understand
there are quite a number hereabouts who
“have not complied with the law.
The first day of May has not been as
bright and balmy as usual, and the outlook
for picnics is not very favorable. Weather
sharps say we will have more rain soon.
The granite curbing in front of the Bennallack building, at the corner of Pine and
Commercial streets, was laid too low, and is
not on the right grade with the rest of the
street. Unless it is raised the new concrete sidewalk now being put down will
have a very decided slope from the street to
the building on the Pine-street side.
ae
Another Company Store.
W. H. Turner, who keeps a variety store
on Main street, Grass Valley, has been notified to vacate the place, and it is understood that it is to be fitted up in fine style
. for a company store, by S. P. Dorsey, the
_ This
will be the second store of that kind in the
town. Nevada City can boast of not having
a@ company store in the town, and all” niners
are privileged to buy of whom they please
without jeopardizing their situations.

At the Normandy sinking is continued
and the shaft is now dowh seventy-five feet.
They are still taking out fine rock.
At the Steep Hill mine the owners are

last week.
Mr. Bruce of the Rusty Padlock is still in
Sacramento purchasing machinery.
Mr. Attwood and partner are sinking a
ghaft on the side of the hill just in front of
the office at the California mine. They are
down twenty-five feet and have struck a
god-leoking stringer.
The Picayune gravel claim is being worked
by Mr, Torpie, Chas. Cross and the Grant
Bros., who have done a great deal of dead
