A STRONG -ATTRACTION,
“The Gaiety Girl” Will Be With Us on
Monday Evening Next.
Next Monday evening Goodwin’s London Gaiety Girl .Company will appear at
the Theatre in this city and it~ will doubtless take the town by storm, as it has done
everywhere it has appeared, ‘‘Fun, and
los of it,” is the company’s motto and they
adhere to the maxim in every particular. . .
_ “The Gaiety Girl’ abounds with laughable
situations and mirth of the lightest and
merriest kind, . The troupe. comprises ‘topnotch comedians, handsome girls and graceful dancers, James F. Post, the clever
comedian who visited this city with “U &
I” and “‘Two’of.a Kind,” and Gus Bruno
sustain the leading comedy roles. Miss
Marian Nolan, the origina] California Venus,
is among the pretty girls with the company.
A San Francisco paper comments as follows
on the play: ‘**The Gaiety Girl’ has
done a very big business at the Baldwin
Theatre, For the last few performances
hundreds have been turned away, which
promises to make its second and last week
as great a success. It is a very bright,
clever show, with many attractive features,
and the best dancing in the skirt line we
have had here,”

Another Mine Bonded.
F, C. Beckwith of London has bonded of
Thomas: and William Kirkham the Old
Home mine, situated in the Blue Tent district. The property consists of a quartz
ledge that ig an extension of the Mt. Vernon, which.Jatter mine is now known as the
Oro Grande, The Old Home claim has
never been worked, but an expert has thoroughly inspected the location, and upon the
favorable report made by him the company
decided to.take it under bond, Work will
be started before long, and when this
mine and the Oro Grande get to running
the appearance of things in that vicinity
will be greatly changed. New life and activity will be.instilled into the section, and
other claims will be prospected and developed, Blue Tent has the promise of a.new
era of prosperity such as it has not enjoyed
for many years.
Where the Machinery Will Go.
The machinery that George Senn recently
purchased from the Delhi Company is being
taken down and got in readiness to be sent
to this place, five men being engaged in the
work, There has been a difference in the
statements as to which mine this machinery
is to be put on, but we are reliably informed
that it is to be placed on the Morning Star
mine. This is the mine which George W.
Baldwin and son worked not long ago and.
from which such excellent quartz was taken
by them. The old shaft is being incréased
in size and all preliminary work is being
hurried, so as to facilitate the erection of
the machinery when it arrives,

DEATH OF GEO. L. WATERS,
—
The Well-Knowh Attorney Dies in Idaho
Last Month.
Judge George L. Waters, an attorney well
known in. this city, died at Bellevue, Idaho,
on the 14th of last month. Mr. Waters
settled at Sacramento in 1858, where he
to Grass Valley, living at the latter place a
number of years, during which time he became acquainted with many of the citizens
of this town. His wife became divorced
from him and for some time she taught in
the schools of Grass Valley. Subsequently
she went to San Francisco and engaged ‘in
newspaper writing, which occupation she
has since given up. = ‘
George L, Waters went from Grass Valley
to the State of Nevada and then drifted to
Idaho, where he arose to prominence in his
profession and became the Attorney General, a position he filled with honor. After
leaving this county he married again,
About three years ago Mr. Waters returned
to this county, bringing with him his wife
this city, living on upper Pine street, near
J, C.-Locklin’s residence. He opened a
law office in the Tilley building, at the corner ef Broad and Pine streets, He was
appointed by the Superior Court to defend
William Hyndman, who killed Wm. Searle
at Washington. The jury convicted Hyndman.and he was sent to the penitentiary. But
Waters appealed the case to the Supreme
Court and obtained a reversal and order for
a new trial, Legal business being rather
slack Waters had in the meantime sold out
everything and gone back to Idaho. The
prisoner for whom he had-made such a determined fight was returned to. this county,
and after remaining a few weeks in th
county jail he was released, the Dist
Attorney deeming it rather doubtful whether
a conviction could be secured on a second
trial, as under the ruling of the Supreme
Court evidence would be admitted that was
refused at the first trial,

Going East as a Runner.
Tomorrow the athletic team of the University of California leaves for the East to
take part in the intercollegiate games that
are fixed for this month and next in some
of the principal cities. Among the names
of the members-of the above team is that of
Philip R, Bradley, and if we are not mistaken he is the "youngest son of Mrs. H. 8.
Bradley, and was born in Nevada City.
His description as published in the Examiner reads as follows; f

nineteen years ago. He is 5 feet 8 inches
tall and weighs 140 pounds in his running

24 1-5 seconds, the 440-yard dash in 53 1-5
and the half-mile in 2:03, He is ene of the
strongest finishers on the Coast, and trotted
over the line in 2:03 last Saturday, winning
with very little effort, If Bradley is pushed
he can, without doubt, run the distance
very close to two minutes. ae
The contests that are to take place will
be with teams from colleges in Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York and Michigan,
A Famous Woman,
Millie Christine will exhibit here in-about

The Prospects at This Willow Valley Mine
Are Highly, Encouraging.
The Montana ledge, situated in Willow
Valley district, above the schoolhouse, and
owned by Mrs. Elizabeth Jones, was bonded
some time ago to Mrs. R, E, Lane. The
latter has a force of eight men at work deVéloping the mine, and the prospects met
with, already are very encouraging. The
shaft has reached a depth of 400 feet. A
steam—power hoisting and pumping plant is
on the mine and has a capacity sufficient to
admit of sinking 1,000 feet..
The main ledge is ane foot in width,
and from the stringers two to four. inches
wide that are continually coming into it,
the miners conclude that they will eventually strike a good-sized ledge. The quartz
is rich in galena and sulphurets and shows
some free gold. Work has been going on
for six months, but the extraction of quartz
has just commenced, and yesterday the
ore bin contained about two tons. The
claim is a large one and offers opportunities
for extensive working, should the develop—
ments now going forward warrant it.
The Montana was never worked so deep
béfore, and the present tapping of the ledge,
which occurred only a few days ago, is regarded as an important development, showing that the ledges, or some of them, in
that particular section extend downward a
considerable distance.and that the ore continues to improve in richness. It was the
prevalent opinion for many years that the
ledges of the Willow Valley district were
nearly all shallow and would pinch out ata
depth of 300 or 400. feet and turn into the
solid granite. If further work at the. Montana demonstrates that this theory is false
it will stimulate prospecting and development work in that whole section,
Mrs, Lane has displayed much enérgy
and enterprise in this venture and we hope
she may make a fortune out of her investment,

Deafness Cannot be Cured
By local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear, There
is only one way to cure Deafness, and that is
by constitutional remedies, Deafness is
caused by an inflamed condition of the
mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube.
When this tube gets inflamed you have a
rumbling sound of imperfect hearing, and
when it is entirely closed Deafness is the
result, and unless the inflammation can be
taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever ; nine cases out of ten are caused: by
catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed
condition of the mycous surfaces,
