Be Fired a Gun and Disconcerted s Brit ish Colony. Caps Town claims the honorg! giving birt? to the smallest creature ever known fe beeome s gunner in the royal artillery, or any other artillery in the whole world At the castle, Cape Town, tere is a mag nrificent gun worked by wiectricity, uscé for giving the midday and evening time One fine day all the military and civil‘ans in Cape Town were astonished to hear the hours before the proper time, 12 being th: usual hour for firing. Messengers came trom the generai commanding the station, the brignde major, commanding cfficers of each regiment and battery stationed ir Jape Town and from everybody interested, but the answer was that no person had Seon near the gun, nor had anybody interfered with the wires, battery or source from which it was fired. Ali the officials were fearfully puzzle2 at the extrfordinaty occurrence, but could give no explanadon whatever. The general in command af the station became furious and said that shere was mismanagement somewhere ané gave orders for a strict search to be made ay the officials for the guilty party. Search was made, but nothing: resulted to throw any light on the extraordinary wWrair, although the greatest possible pains were taken to solve the mystery. . They had practically given the search up, when suddenly the news came from the officials stating that the culprit had been caught wand arrested. It seems the electric current ‘or firing off the gunis supplied by the royal observatory of Cape Town and goes
jhere by means of an instrument known as a relay that isin the central telegraph ‘ice of the station, the distance being ybout 500 yaris. The action of-the current soing through the instrument’s main nceves a sort of light tongue, which is very incly set, so fine that the least little thing yeuld affoct it. This forces the current lircctly into what they term the time uses, which have the power of firing the mun at the gastle. On examining the instrument one of he officie's found a big brown spider inIde. It appears that, while having an exdoring trip aronnd the instrument, the infortunate spider must have touched this ongue sufficiently to move it, and conse‘ently it fired off the gun. The general onimanding the station sent the spider 0 the Cape Town museum, where he is iow to be sven with 4 card uhderneath iim entitling him the ‘‘Little Gunner,”’ snd giving a full account of his adventure with the Cape Town midday time gun, which proved his last adventure, hewever. —New York World. He caught hold of Thempson’s feet with a full determination that if Thonipson ‘‘went by the board’’ he would zo with him. in the meantime the boat was spinning ap the river at a wonderful rate of speed, and Thompson was lying flat.on his stomach, with the line almost cutting his hands in two. The fish carried the skiff about two miles up the river and then raed down scream with so much suddenness ps to alniost swamp the boat. The fish kept the race up for_about two miles down the rive, and finally darted in to »ward ghore and toward a pile ofbrush whore tt stopped.
