DAY’S BLAZING ORB.
Sir Robert Ball on the Substances of Which
the Sun Is Made.
Let us-see-if-we have the necessary
data for ascertaining what this solar material must be. We are first confronted
with the fundamental question as to
whether it is likely to be composed of
elements found on the earth. There was
a time no doubt when “it might have
been urged that in all probability the
solar elements were so far different from
any bodies known to terrestrial chemists
of something altogether beyond our cognizance. But this view cannot be sustained in the present state of science.
Nothing is more remarkable in the recent advance. of knowledge than the
clear demonstration of the fandamental
unity between the elements present in
the celestial bodies and those elements
of which. the earth is composed. It is no
doubt true that we have'found grounds
for believing that there may be one or
two elements in the sun which we do not
find here.
We have indeed assigned to these
dimly discerned elements the hypothetical names of coronium and helium.
But even if such bodies exist at all they
are certainly wanting in the essential
qualities that must be attributed to any
component of the photospheric clouds.
“Labby’s” Opinion of Astor.
Far from having any objection to an
American millionaire spending his
money with us, I should be delighted if
all large owners of house property in
New York were to follow the example
of Mr. Aster. I feel indeed personally
obliged to him, for he provides me with
. & welk edited ine and newspaper,
more than the penny which I pay for it.
But my gratitude does not quite blind
me to the Indicrous absurdity of an
can citizen devoting his means to
landation of an institution like that
of hereditary legislators and to preaching that England should augment the
size of her empire.—London Truth.
Timothy Dyer’s Rare Record.
A rare record is boasted by Mr. Timothy Dyer of Vinal Haven, Me., who is
90 years of age. » Until he was 18 years
old he never wore a shoe. He has never
ridden on.a car, and but once on a steamboat..He—has—never entered a-tavern;
never quarreled with any one, and a
barber has never shaved him. And yet
his life has not been destitute of excitelow pulled in unaided a halibut weighing three times as much as he does.—

_ ‘Wives are cheap today. At Croydon
on Sunday a laboring man disposed of
his spouse fora pot of ‘‘fourpenny’’ and

TO: THE PUBLIC.
J. A. Northway and A. W. Morris are
the new proprietors of the Union Hotel, being the successors of the late firm of Northway & Bodewig. These gentlemen have
formed a co-partnership and will hereafter
conduct the house as a strictly first-class
hotel. Mr. Northway herewith returns his
sincere thanks to the patrons of the old
firm, and both gentlemen solicit a share of
the public’s patronage for the new. Every
attention will be shown the traveling public. New and important improvements
have been made in the hotel and grounds,
and tourists will find it the most healthful
as well as comfortable hotel in the mountains. oe :
J, A. NorTHWAY, —
A. W. Morais.
As the terrestrial clouds consist of
water they are derived—not fronts simple element, but from a composite body
formed of the gases-—oxygen and hydrogen. The multitude of composite bodies
is, of course, innumerable, and the task
of searching for the solar constituents
‘would therefore seem to be an endless
one, unless we were in some way en
abled to restrict the field of inquiry,
‘This is just what the vast temperature
of the sun permits us todo, It is well
known that at a heat resembling that at
“which the photosphere is maintained”
chemival compounds cannot in general
exist. Ordinary chemical compounds exposed to temperatures of such elevation
are instantly resolved into their elementary components, It is thus manifest
that in the endeavor to find the photospheric material we have not toscan the
illimitable fiel4 of chemical compounds.
We have only to consider the several
elementary bodies themselves,
Thus at once the research is narrowed
to a choice among some 64 different materials, this being abont the number of
“the different slementary bodies: Most of
them have already been actually detected in the sun, and it is very likely
that the others do really exist there also
in some part or other of the sun’s mighty

Straining After Style.
The Vienna correspondent of a Lonon. journal, writing about the hold
that fashion has on the women of the
Austrian capital, says: ‘It may beconfidently asserted that every Vienna woman and girl dresses in a station above
her lot in life. This year not a maidservant wears a last year’s jacket. It is
impossible to say where the hundreds
of thousands of jackets that were worn
last year have gone to. On Sunday
and even on week days we see even the
humblest women in jackets whose
gleeyes stand ont like the ears of some
buge elenhant.”’

Deafness Cannot be Oured
By local applications, as they cannot reach
the diseased portion of the ear. There is
only one way to cure Deafnegs, and that is
by constitutional remedies. Deafness. is
caused by an inflamed condition of the
mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube.
When this tube gets inflamed you havea
rumbling souud or imperfeet hearing, and
when it is entirely closed Deafness is the
result, and unless the inflammation can he
taken cut and this tube restored to ite normal condition, hearing will be destroyed
forever ; nine cases out of ten are caused by
catarrh, whieh is nothing but an inflamed
condition of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for any
case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that
capnot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Cure.
