An exchange says: While men are daily inquiring as to the causes which have produced the great financial disasters that have swept over the country in the last six months, I say to them and to all the world there is an answer in the words spoken by the Hon. James G. Blaine-several years ago, in which he pictured the scenes that are now transpiring as truly as ever a prophet spoke. Let me ask you to give attention to his words and ponder them well while I read: “J love my country and countrymen. I am an American, and I rejoice every day of my life that Iam. I enjoy the generat prosperity of my country, and know that the werkingmen of this land are the best paid, the best fed, and the best clothed of any laborers on the face of the earth. Many of them have homes of their own. They are surrounded by all the comforts and many of the luxuries of life. I shudder, however at the thought that the time has come when all this will be changed, when the geu# eral prosperity of the country will be destroyed, when the great body of workmen in this land, who are now so prosperous, will hear their wives and children cry for bread; that the duty must eome when the great factories and manufactories of this land will shut down, and where there is now life and activity there will be the silence of the tomb. And the reason why this -must be is this: “The great Southern wing of the Democratic party are determined to establish the doctrine of free trade in this land. They will be assisted by their Northern -allies. The fight is now on. There is a great body of visionary but educated men who are em— pleyed day by day in writing free-trade essays and arguments in favor of that doctrine, which find their way inte every newspaper in this land. The great body of our people have never experienced, themselves, the suffering which always result when the protective principles are laid aside. Pvisoned and excited by the wild stateménts of these writers and the demagogic appeals of ~"Democra tic speakers, the result will be that . im the near future these forces, which are now working, will be strong enough to defeat at the polls the party advocating the doctrine of protection. *J¢ must inevitably. follow that uncertainty and doubt will s«==-~The business men of.the country, fearing the destruction of the principle of protection, will decline to . engage in business, consequently mills will AND “= ghut down and the workingmen will be thrown out of employment. ‘The people will that they cannot be prosperous and have work while this principle is threatened. In the -midst of their snffering.they will learn that the only way they can be prosperous and happy is to vete for the party that has built up the industries by which they have gained a livelihood, because they will then see clearly that when the manufactory is shut down there is no demand for the only thing which they have to sell, and that is their labor.” James G. Blaine was gifted with prophetic vision. How well he saw the future of our once-happy country hes been forcibly de-. will be promptly and faithfully attended to. monstrated in the past few months, and is : on in full force now. ~The Southern wing of Democracy; sided by most of the Northern Democrats, and a few Republicans, are getting in their work. And, like the simoon ef the Arabian desert, leave only destruction in their path and beneath the sands of Democratic ideas lies buried the industries pu ANNUAL MEETING OF THE STOCKholders of the Od‘n Gravel Mining Comof the country. + +e New Try This. Little Daughter Of a Church of England minister. cured of a distressing rash, by Ayer’s Sarsaparilla. Mr. RicHAkD MeGill-st., Montreal, P. Q., says: I have sold Ayer’s Family Medicines for 40 years, and have heard nothing but good said of theni. I know of many Wonderful Cures performed by Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, one in particular being that of a little daughter of a Church of England minis_ ter. The child was literally covered from head to foot with a red and exceedingly troublesome rash, from which she had suffered for two or three years, in spite of the best medical treatment available. Her father was in great distress about the case, and, at my recommendation, at last began to administer. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, two bottles of which effected a complete cure, much to her relief and her father’s delight. I am sure, were he here to-day, he would testify in the strongest terms as to the merits of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla Prepared by Dr. J.C. Ayer & Co., Lowell, Mass.
