The year A: D. 1899 will go down in the annals of history as one of the fat years. The prosperity which has followed the general depression of a few years ago is wide-spread, reaching the four quarters of the globe. In Engjland’times were. never better. All the great factories and’ mills and yards are busy hives. of industry. Work is plentiful and. wages are good. In the United ‘States the news of increased prosperity comes from a thousand places. North and South, East and West, all are alike sharing in the boom. All branches of trade are feeling the magnetic touch of the business revival. ‘The farmer, the workingman, the merchant ére enjoying the brightening: influence of prosperity. And it is grati‘fying to know thut when a leading paper says that “this has been a grand year for. business encouragement and financial development, and all men without distinction of party have reason to rejoice thereat.” 2 2@e . “Whe Are the Filipinos? In Manila “Filipino” means a person of unmixed Spanish blood bern in the Philippine Islands.
