Before departing the guests partook of delicate refreshments, ; Word has reached this city to the effect that by the 18th of June active work on the proposed new electric railroad from this city to Grass Valley will be under way. That date has been definitely settled upon, while in the meantime all arrangements necessary to starting willbe arranged. Promoter Martin is confident that he will be able to have cars runniog by Admission Day. Gus Davenpcrt and Frank Bost were out Saturday running the scraper on the grade between here and Purdon’s bridge. They also had along a big wagon, to which six horses were attached. In some way one of the wheels .went into a ditch, upsetting the heavy wagon. Both were thrown from the seat and fortunately escaped serious injury. As entertainers the Elks can not be beat, and it is the wish of their friends that they will arrange for these outings more frequently. An Error. In Saturday evening’s TRANSORIPT appeared an article which stated that the miners of Nevada City had taken up a subscription to defray the expense of bringing the remains of the late William Monroe, who died suddenly Friday morning at Lundy, Mono county. Ghe Yuba’ Devetopment Company Will Soon Have One. A large planer for the Yuba Development Company arrived here yesterday. J. Pendola and M. G. The members of the Epworth League of the Methodist. Church of this city will go to Gress Valley this evening, to have a joint session with the members at that place. All those who are going should be at the charch at 7 o’clock, as it is requested by the League. Dancing Party Postponed. The closing dance of. the Royal Dancing Club has been postponed until Friduy evening, May.17:h. The faneral of Mrs. Mary Williams took place yesterday from St. Canice church, aud was largely attended by respects to one with whom they had become attached. Brownell He Died at Grass Valley Last Saturday Tight. Edgar’ W. Brownell, who resided in this city some years ago, cied at Grass Valley last Saturday night from the triple cause of cancer, pneumonia and erysipelas. The cancerous growth was on the ander side of his jaw and was removed by Dr. John T. Jones afew weeks ago. Since the operation was successfully performed Mr. Brownell contracted erysipelas and pneumonia, and suffered such intense pain that he became deliricus at times. ‘The deceased was born in Stanford, New York, and was aged 58 years, 10 months and 26 days. .He settled at Grass Valley about twenty-two. years ago and had been employed at the mines most of the time. He was head millman at the Providence mine here several years: ago and held a like position at the Austin. mine at. Austin, Nevada, afterwards. For the past few years he has been in the employ of the Pennsylvania Mining Company at Grass Valley. He leaves a widow, three sous and two daughters.
