Morrison, citizens of Nevada, were attracted by the reports, and paid a visit to the plave since famous, A man by the name of Comstock had discovered a lead, apparently filled with some conditionally, and brought over to Nevada some specimens for aseay. The assay was made by J.J. Ott, and resulted in $1,595 of gold and $3,196 of silver per ton. A vast excitement ensued, and hundreds flocked from Nevada to Washoe to try their fortunes, aud secure a claim on the enchanted ground. Morrison afterward sold out and realized a handsome for‘une. A committee of five, inelading Henry Meredith of Nevade, were at once appointed by the citizens of that place, to make arrangements for forming a volunteer company to prce tect settlers. and to send ecouts to warn parties in the mountains. Two companies were formed, one under command of Mejor Ormeby and the other of Captain MoDonald, nambering all about one hundred. and six, and marched from Virginia City to avenge the maesecre of the Americans. ‘The companies advanced on the trail to Pyramid Lake on the 12:h, and while ia the paee were fired upon by a large force of Indians, in ambuegade. A charge was meade by the whites, but the In tiane fled right and left, sur1oundiog the whites, and firing occasionally, The ammunition of the volanteers was soon expended, when the Tudians closed in and fired coptinuously. -The whites fought gallantly as long ae their amwunition lasted, and then broke in confusion, scattering in the mountains, completely roated. A great many, were killed, ‘ including Meredith, who fought bravely to the last. A great excitement was created in Nevada by the receipt of this intel ligence. A volunteer company of thirty men was immediately formed, and proceeded to the scene of troubles, ander the command of Sheriff Van Hagan. The sum of $2,265 was aubscribed at once by our citizens, $500 being subscribeed by Birdseye & Felton. The Nevada company were absent opon their campaign nearly six weeks. They Virginia City, where increased to seventyseven men, and mostly Nevadane, and tben marched to Riley’s station, where the organization of the entire volunteer force was made, under Col. Hays. We have not space to follow the movements of the army. At Fort Story, Henry Hasey, of Nevada, was severely wounded, in a skirmish with the Indiane. On their retarnfrom Mad Lake, to which the mounted force penetrated in pureait of se ge pod py recognized an raven preg of Meredith. The dead were scattered for fifteen miles from the scene of the first attack, and were all more or less mutilated by the savages.
