In Jane, 1859, ramors reached Nevads of rich mining developments in
Washoe, John Stone and W. P. Morrison, citizens of Nevada, were attracted by the reports, and paid a visit

was carried to Virginia of a massacre
by Indians of a party of seven white
men below the great bend of the Truackee, and of other probable murders,
and that the border settlers were ta
danger. A committee of five, inelading Henry Meredith of Nevade, were
at once appointed by the citizens of
that place, to make arrangements for
forming a volunteer company to prce
tect settlers. and to send ecouts to
warn parties in the mountains. Two
companies were formed, one under
command of Mejor Ormeby and the
other of Captain MoDonald, nambering all about one hundred. and six,
and marched from Virginia City to
avenge the maesecre of the Americans.
‘The companies advanced on the trail
to Pyramid Lake on the 12:h, and
while ia the paee were fired upon by a
large force of Indians, in ambuegade.
A charge was meade by the whites, but
the In tiane fled right and left, sur1oundiog the whites, and firing occasionally, The ammunition of the volanteers was soon expended, when the
Tudians closed in and fired coptinuously. -The whites fought gallantly as

then broke in confusion, scattering in

Meredith, who fought bravely to the
last. A great excitement was created
in Nevada by the receipt of this intel
ligence. A volunteer company of thirty men was immediately formed, and
proceeded to the scene of troubles, ander the command of Sheriff Van Hagan. The sum of $2,265 was aubscribed
at once by our citizens, $500 being subscribeed by Birdseye & Felton. The
Nevada company were absent opon
their campaign nearly six weeks. They

the organization of the entire volunteer force was made, under Col. Hays.
We have not space to follow the movements of the army. At Fort Story,
Henry Hasey, of Nevada, was severely
