Knowlton, former manager of the St.
Nicholas Hotel, for whose arrest a
warrant was issued Saturday, charging
him with embezzling the fands of his
brother-in-la ", James H. Doolittle, is
back in this city. He was arrested at
Watsonville, whither he fled after his
shortages, amounting to $23,000, were
discovered, and was returned to the
city today. After being formally
Charged at the City Prison, he was released on bonds.

Killed by a Mos.
Topeka, Kas, May 18.—Dr. Herman .
(colored) was fatally shot at midnight
by the members of a Vigilance Oommittee, at 1117 North Jefferson Street.
Herman lived at the house of Mrs.
George Hamler, whose husband died
under Herman’s care, several weeks
ago. The mob found Herman armed . .
with a shotgun and* revolver.

at Dr. Herman, shooting him twice in
