James Reid, formerly of Moore’s Flat, . who is now located at Johannesburg, South Africa, writes to an old friend —in this “city, 1 and from the letter we take the following: **The fact.is I would have written you before now only I have been in a contizual ‘* swither ” whether to stay here any longer "or just get a ticket and obsquatulate. However, I am getting kind of used to things, and my health is better, and I sometimeg think I may as well worry a few more months here in the hope that things will impreve back in California and all over the States, where English newspapers are look-. _ ing for a great revival of every. industry from the repeal of" tiie“ Sherman bill and passage of the new’ tariff law. I hope it may be so, but can’t see where the revival is going to come from in the States. Of “course it is easy seeing the English side of the question, as the Englishman’s idea of trade is that nobody should .try to make for himself what Johuny Bull has made to sell to him; that he has been making it longer, can make it better, can make it cheaper, and consequently should be allowed to make it and sell it, without let or hindrance, in every country in the world. And it, strikes me that a goud many of our Democratic friends must think that the Englishman's idea is the correct one. “This South African Republic is the country where they have adopted the policy of protection with a vengeance. They manufacture nothing and don’t raise sufficient food for themselves, yet there is not a solitary article admitted free unless it is the product of the Orange Free State, when it “is considered as that of their own tribes and families, and of course is admitted free. ~—vone-Everything-else-is-taxed-out~sfalt-reason; } -—-sense-er justice. But enough, _ **Iam sending you $50 and wish you to pay my dues in Quitman Lodge, whatever the amount may be; then pay the balance into the Chapter and Commandery, which I think should at least keep me even until I see you face to face again. If you are not too busy, or lazy, or _indisposed, I would. like to hear from you as to what's being done and what the prospects are, especially in the way of mining. Remember me t6 Hegarty and other old ‘friends the first time you see them.’ —Se BIDS OPENED. . The Proposals For Building a New Bridge Across Bear River.
