For a number of years the athletic club of this city has had the reputation of being one of thwStrongest and most skillfully trained athletic institutions in the State, Its ability and the high class of the~ performances that have been periodically given before the public have won for it the encomiums-of the press and the praises of professional atiletes. Its success has been due to the assiduous manner in which the members have applied. themselves to the various exercises that are practiced in the gymMuch credit for the physical and muscular development of the members is also due to the high character and eminent ability: of its principal instructor, Prof. Charles Hartman, His extensive knowledge of gymnastics generally has succeeded materially in placing tle club on its present high plane, His principal assistant, Mr. Ed. Baker, is also deserving of credit for the indefatigable way in which he has labored to bring the club up to its high standard of excellence. He las exhibited a skill and ability that can only be found in the trained athlete. We are glad to note, the interest that is being manifested in this institution by professional and business men, notably Mr. Giffin, whois practically its head, which augurs well for its future prosperity. The gymnasium of the club affords splendid opportunities for those _ whose duties are confined to the office and the for any case of Catarrh that cannot be cured The impression prevails in the valley that the mining section is not an integral (part of this commonwealth, and the contemporary referred to has fallen into the same error as the Record-Union. It has been wired across the continent that President Cleveland is contemplating a final and complete separation from the Democratic fold} The cause ofthis departure from established political creeds . and life long party affiliations ‘is tobe found in the ‘great anxiety he feigns for the currency problem. It is: stated that the question is paramount with the President at this time—that matters of a diplomatic and domestic nature have no interest for him since the agitation for the remonetization of silver began. It is asserted that Cleveland will only take this course in case the next Democratic National Convention adopts a free coinage plank in its platform. If he can succeed in forcing the convention to accept his views on the currency question and to adopt a platform indorsing his course on financial matters and incorporate the single standard system, then it will not be necessary for him to take the steps contemplated. But if President Cleveland’s connection with his party depends on the attitude of the delegates to the next convention on the silver store, and for this reason should receive the question, by inserting a silver plank in their hearty support and co-operation of those platform of principles, then the link conwho. believe. in developing the muscular] necting them is not-very strong.
