Elijah Pease, who has resided at the town of Sweetland since 1854, died early this morning. He was a_ bachelor, and had earned his living by ranching. is was 91 years old. Mrs. John Trevithick, who has resided at Sweetland for a number of years, died there last night. She leaves a busband, and her age was 60 years She had been sick for sume time, but about two weeks ago she had entirely recovered. A few days ago she was taken sick again and her death was wholly én of by her acquaintances. Al. Williams of Sweetland became a “paving maniae yesterday. He bad been biok some time, and was talking about The thought of his not being able to do.so, on account of his illness, so preyed. upon his. mind Constable Northup, Geo. Sneath and Wm. Slack brought him to this city this afternoon and lodged him in the county jail. 2+ Seo City Trustees, A special meeting of the Board of City Trustees was held last evening, and business connected with the sewerage system was taken up and completed. Engineer Miller ,.was instracted to finish up uncompleted portions of the system in different parts of the city as quickly as possible.. A pipe Jine ‘wilt be laid on High street, 445 feet long; on Prospect street, 358 feet, and Zion street, 504 feet. Work will be completed within two weeks, when the sewer system will be entirely.completed and in working order. A committee was appointed to wait on Samuel Granger, and have a defective sever on his premises repaired immediately, The Board purchased the roadscraper from A. Frandy for $75. .It has heretofore been rented by the city. Geo. A. Gray made application, on behalf of the Masonic, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pbhythias fraternities, to make a two-inch tap on the cemetery main. An order was made granting the same. A warrant was drawn for $7 in favor of the Sacramento Pipe Works beiug the balance due the firm from the city. The Gamewall Fire Alarm Oompany sont a communication to the Trustees s‘ating that there was due them $490 on the alarm system, and $100 for an indicator, which was never ordered by the Board. The City warrant book shows-that the city does not owe them one dollar, + 6@0 Funeral Today. The funeral of the late Mrs. Archie McFall, mother of Superintendent Dan J.MeFall, took place from St. Canice Catholic Church this morning, and was largely uttended by many of the friends andiacquaintances of the deceased. Driscoll arrived here last night from San Francisco. Frank Vaughn canie down from the Plumbago Mine yesterday. Dr. Sargent A. Chapman is here ona visit to-his mother and brother. Irvine Watson has gone over to Placer county on mining business, H. ©. Hopkins of Oakland is here spending a few days with friends. H. L. Movill, one of San Francisco’s popular traveling men, is in town. H. 8. Williams and son of San Francisco are here on a visit to friends. George McCullough “and J. Bailey were here yesterday from San Juan. G. W.-Davis and J. Cairns came down from Moore’s Flat this morning. A.P. Matthews of San Francisco left on the morning stage for Camptonville, J. B. Williams of San. Jose arrived here last evening, en route to Camptonville. Ool. M. W. Mather and wife left this morning for Sana Francisco and Oakland. W. Flewellyn, who has been here ona visit, returned this morning to Downieville. L. J. De Sable left for Paso Robles Springs today, where he will remain for a month. T. F, Jones, who has been spending a few. days here, has returned to Camptonville. Mrs. E. L. Hager left on the morning train for a few day’s visit to friends in Sacramento, F. W. Taylor and wife of San Francisco are among the guests at the National Hote), B. J. Dillon came down from Sierra City yesterday and left this morning for Mary sville. H. Paine came over from North San Juan yesterday and left this morning for Cape Nome, Mark Roberts has returned from San Francisco, where he attended the I. O. O. ¥F. Grand Lodge. Mrs, A. V. Hiukson returned home yesterday after a visit at Sacramento und San Francisco. Mrs. Fannie McGibbons, a former resident of this vity, arrived here lust evening on a visit to relatives. L, P. Schwartz will resume his position as clerk at Scadden’s grocery today, after being laid up with sickness, D. H. Birdsall, the powder man.who has been making a trip through the mountains, returned here this morning. P. R. Allen, formerly of the Shaw Co,. but now advance agent for the Madison Square Co., arrived here last evening. Theodore Schwartz of Pleasant Valley will leave tomorrow for San Francisco and from there he will siil for Cape Nome, Dr. Wolf who has been to San Frau cisco on a visit returned here last evening and left this morning for Washington. Joho Langman and Rotieri Monteith’ who are well known at this city, will leave San Francisco on the 26th inst. Saloon vs. Church. ' Yoiepo, May 15. Rev. F. E. Patton, a@ young Christian minister of this city, preached from the stage of Burt’s Opera House. He said: “By the practice of the Church more people are doomed to eternal perdition than ever caused by tbe saloons or any other influence. Place no faith at all in your Churches. Mark my words, that there will be a _ reformation that will shake the religious world to its foundation. Isms and schisms will be parts of a broken. parachute.” Rev. Patton will arrange for a church’ edifice and will have in the yollding billards, pool, meri etc. : Great Excitement. Prrrssura (Pa.). May, 15.—Excitement still prevails among the residents of Turtle Oreek, Pa., over the action of the Board of Health in converting the schoolhouse into a smallpox hospital, but there has been no farther rioting. The Madison Square Company to Play Here Next Week. The Madison Square Company will perform in this city all of next week: at the low prices of 10, 20 and 30 cents. We think. they will be greeted with crowded houses every night, for they are deserving of it. It is a well established fact that the public wants to be amused and when suitable amusement is furnished at prices ‘within the reach of all, liberal patronage will be the result. There are plenty of good plays which can be had on reasonable terms, and plenty of competent actors who are willing to engage in the production of the same at a fair living salary. Mr. Lowe of the Madison Square Company has secured both and is presenting a repertoire of modern in a first class manner, at prices néver attempted before by a repertoire company. ‘Ten,tewnty, and thirty cents, and the phenominal business they do every where attests the wisdom of his policy.
