Great Demonstration.
Everybody Full of Enthusiasm
For the High School Cause.
HE DEMONSTRATION held last evening in this city. by the
High School supporters was a complete and overwhelming success,
and if there were any opponents to the proposed measure in tewn
they must have gone and hid themselves or have been converted, for eyerybody seemed to be strongly in favor of the proposition and were either shout.
ing “High School” or warmly endorsed it to their friends.
Early in the evening the pupils of the High School and Eighth Grade,
headed by a fine drum corps and marshaled by Principal J. G. O’Neill and
Prof. E. H. Barker, marehed up Broad street to the Theater. In the lead was
a boy carrying a banner, made up of High Sehool colors, while alongside of
him was another youth carrying the emblem ef Laurel Parlor, N. D. G. W.
The-bright young ladies and gentlemen with their pretty badges of purple and
gold formed an imposing and magnificent procession, and they elicited many
cheers from our citizens while marching to the theater. .
Nevada Theatre was well fliled with people by the time the school children
arrived and took their seats in the section of the building reserved for them.
The school children of the lower grades were present in large numbers as
‘were also the members of Laurel Parlor, who met at their hall early in the eveming and marched to the theater in a body. The stage had been very prettily
and tastily decorated with streamers of purple and gold and: American flags,
while flowers in profusion, but artistically arranged, bordered the whole front
of the platform. The stage with its bright colored desorations, presented a
handsome picture, indeed.
The meeting was presided over by Fred Searls and Geo, B. Finnegan, and
the program as announced in yesterday’s TRaNSORIPT was carried out with
great success and each number greeted with liberal applause. The speeches
endorsing the High School measure, although necessarily brief, were convincing and entertaining, and many who came with unsettled or doubtful opinions
concerning the expediency of,she High School proposition left the hall with
clear views and conclusions, and with the determination to vote fer the High
School measure and to work for a unanimous victory and the triumph
of advanced education in Nevada City. ;
The speakers of the evening, all of whom gave forcible and convincing
arguments in favor of the High School proposition, were Fred Searls, Thos, 8.
Ford, J. G. O’Neill, Hon. F. T. Nilon, L. 8, Calkins, Rev. Wm. Angwin, E.’B.
Power, Rev, J. P. Olyne, Rev. W. A. Rimer, Mrs. E, A. Moore, Mrs. J, M. Buffington, Hon, E. M. Preston and W. F. Englebright. Rev. Josiah Sims was
listed as one of the speakers, but was unavoidably detained from attending the
meeting. He sent a letter, however, which was read by Chairman Searls, in
which he expressed himself as heartily and enthusiastically in favor of the
High School movement.
The class yells of the pupils of the High Schools proved an interesting
and entertaining feature, and their origipal and very appropriate compositions
kept the audience in a happy and merry mood. The following was one of the
most popular uf these productions: a
