which started just after Oleveland entered office in hie second term , and which
was precipitated by the victory for his party a few months earlier, sent gold
io the treasury far below the $100,000,000 line, and compelled Oleveland to
issue boads to bay gold. A sale of $50,000,000 of ten-year 6 per cent. bonds
was made on February 1, 1894, and in November of that yeara like amount
had to be sold. Bat this did not suffice. In February, 1895, $62,000,000 of 4
per-cent. thirty-year bonds were sold, and in February, 1896, $100,000,000 at
the same rate and for the same time were disposed of.
These $262,000,000 of intereet bearing bonds had to be sold by Cleveland in
