Ed Hamlen, the cattle man, came over from Sierra Valley this morning. J. Hennessey who has been sick for the past week is able to be on the street today. Mrs. E. M. McKinlay aod child will go to San Francisco next Tuesday to reside. Miss Catherine Garde of San Francisco will leave this morning for. Washington. Artbur Baxter one of Sacramento’s popular young men is here on a pleasure trip. J.-P. Davenport of Los Angeles is here in the interest of Sherwood & Sherwood. T. A. Carson arrived here last ‘evening from Cincinnati, O.,on his way to his Sierra county mine. Postmaster’ Walter Mobley and Grant Skidmore came down from North Bloomfield today. Miss Allie Dillon left on the morn ing train for San Francisco. In June she will.go to Dawson City. Wm. Mooser Jr. the architect of the new court house came in on the morning train from San Francisco. Mrs. L. Lubeck, who has been touring Europe, arrived in New York yesterday and is expected here s00n. L. Woodruff of Columbia Hill has returned from San Francisco, where be attended the I. O. O. F. Grand Lodge. Mrs. Rogers of North San Juan came over last evening; and left this morning for San Francisco on a visit to relatives. Miss E. Hoeft, who has been to San Francisco purchasing ® new stock of millinery, returned home on last evening’s train. Walter Mobley left for San Francisco today, where he will join his mother, and both will depart for Dawson City next week. Chas. F, McCarthy of the Pacific Bridge Company arrived here today, to look after the construction of the new court house. Frank E. Wadsworth, A. R. Lord and J, M. Walling have returned from Sac ramenhto, where they attended the Republican Stete Convention. Hon. Stanley A. Smith, Superior Judge of Sierra county, arrived here last night on his way home from the Republican State Convention. W. B. Fowler and 8S. P. Fowler of Grass Valley arrived here last evening, and left this morning for Graniteville to take positions in a mine there. Mrs. Fitzpatrick, daughter of ConStable Dillon of this city, will leave San Francisco on the 28th of May for Dawson City, where she will reside. ©. Bright of Scranton, Pa,, who has been to Washington on miuing business returned here last evening and left this morning for San Francisco. W. of Wheatland will give a picnic on the 27th of this month at Oakley's grove, near that town. A little child of Joseph Marsball ot Rough and Ready township was kicked in the face by a horse Tuesday night and was seriously bart. The Madison Square theatrical compavy will play every night next week at the theatre. It is a splendid company, aud low prices will prevail. It is almost the unanimous opinion of the people of Grass Valley that no arrangements be made fora joint celebration—so a prominent gentleman of that city informed a eevee reporter. Grissel Bros, of the Pistons meat market, have made: arrangements to put in a cold storage in their. place, such as are used in all first-class markets where hot weather prevails. On Sunday a delegation of the Native Sons of this city and Grass Valley will go down to Shelby’s Grove and arrange all matters connected with the picnic to take place next Wednesday. Some steps will soon be taken looking to a celebration on the 4th of July ut Nevada City. . If the subscriptions are what they ought to be our people will witness extraordinary attractions on that day. The City Trustees will. hold their regular monthly meeting this evening at which time the new trustees will take their places, and the Board re-organized. ‘T. H. Carr and J.C. Rich go out, and Chas. W. Hill and Sidney Peard go in. Dr. H. W. Wagner, who formerly practiced in this city and left for Sacramento about a year ago, will take unto himself a bride there next month. Friday. a resolution was passed authorizing the new Grand Master to appoints committeee of five to receive bide for anew site. The committee must be appointed within thisty days after the adjournment of the Grand Lodge and will report at the next session. It was not decided to abandon the Thermalito home, but. it is generally understood that that will he the ultimate outcome of the present action. Ever since the home was established in 1898 there has been a constant complaint of the un-. healthfulness of the site, every session of the Grand Lodge has been devoted . to discussing some feasible plati to remedy the situation. The new home -will be situated within fifty miles of San Francisco with a tract of land of as least 150 acres. JOHNSON, ee a It Was Wholly Uvexpected y iis Famfly and Friends in This City, The people here were shocked today to learn’ that Anton “Miller passed away this forenoon, at the ‘German Hospital, San Francisco. Mrs. Miller learned that he was much worse and left here on the 8:45 train this morning to go and see him. ‘It will be a terrible blow to her to find when she arrives at the Hospital that ber loved one has départed this life. Mr. Miller was taken to San Francisco several weeks ago for medical treatment, having had his legs crushed by a cave in the Layton mine. Anton was a good man and well thought of by every one that knew him. He leaves a wife, three children and hosts of friends to mourn his loss. He wasa member of Oustomah Lodge, I. 0.0. F., Milo Lodge, Knights of Pythias and: Nevada City Lodge of Workmen. His remains will be brought to this city, and the faneral will probably take place on Sunday.
