BROWN & CO, sion of ‘court today, in the right-of. Way Contest between the’Southern Pacific. railroad and the city of Pomona, was devoted to hearing testimony introduced by the city to show. that for years the land in disputehad been ‘re~ garded and treated as a public thoroughfare According to the evidence culverts have been built and electric .wires strung by order of the city, and in 1896 the railroad was requested to move certain warehouses off the property, and to put in crossings, that the street might not be blocked. On June 9, 1899, the trustees granted to the Southern California Power ‘Company: the privilege of erecting and maiutaining a system of poles and wires for the transmission;, of electricity for power and heating and: lighting. purposes, along certain streets, including First, which the railroad claims as its property. Nevada City has quite a number of Societies of different kinds but it should have one more and that for the prevention. of cruelty: to animals. It quite often occurs that cruelty of the worst, kind is ‘exhibited on our streets but no one except an officer seems to want to take the responsibility upon themselves to prevent it, but if we had & society to look after this any member could interfere and have the guilty parties prosecuted, as they should be. There areseveral places in town where teams can be found almost any time of the day-or night tied toa post or fénce. Some of these poor dumb brutes are at times left standing at these places for several hours at atime with nothing to protect them from the storms in winter or the hot sun in summer. Horses are not the only animals that are abused either, for it is mot an uncommon sight to see a poor dog Coming along.a street at topmost speed nearly scared to death as the result of acan being tied to its tail. Of course. this is not generally practiced in the business portion of town but on the’ back streets thesight is quite fre. quent. The uukind treatment of animals should*be stopped and the best way to stop it. is to make arrests and the guilty parties compelled to pay for their unfeeling conduct. The new medical laboratory building will be quadrangular in shape, and will be located on Hamilton Walk, between Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh streets, in the city of Philadelphia. The building will be two stories in height above a high basement, and measures 840 feet front by nearly 200 feet in depth. All along the front are arranged small roomeg for research, rooms for ‘professors and their assistants, a library, etc.—these open into a private-corridor, so that men employed in these rooms may pursue their work without. interruption from students passing through the main halls.
