Cutoaco, May 16—All day yesterday
Bert Schlesinger of San Francisco, extorney, with a $200 check in his pocket,
wandered about Ohicago penniless,
gaining his only nourishment by
snffing at the doors of restaurants.
Schlesinger left San Francisco on Friday with $700 and arrived here yesterday with three coppers and a postage
stamp. Some person unknown: to
Schlesinger had touched him for the
rest of ‘the roll and dropped off at
Omaha to spend it looking for Pat
Crowe. Arrived here, he at once wired
home for money. It was answered ‘satisfactorily. at once. After a long
search he found’ a man who could
identify him at the telegraph office.’
Schlesinger had had no breakfast, and
visions of steak rose before him. Unfortunately he was doomed to meet
disappointment. The telegraph company paid him by check. His friend
did not know the bank on which it was
drawn. In vain he protested. The
coinpany was obdurate. So it was
that Schlesinger, with available assets:
faced starvation. At last .a kindhearted hotel man took pity apon him
and cashed the check. Schlesinger left
town last night, swearing never to return.
Bert Schlesinger, referred to in the
above, formerly resided in Downieville
and has frequently visited this city.
He is a lawyer of note, and his
many friends up in this section will
fully appreciate his “penniless” experience in the metropolis of the West.
