FIRLD DAY. shoots of ore in places. that had never been Professor Kimbl’s am Apparatus That Tells the Lecation of Minerals, Prof, L. J, Kimball, the inventor and operator of a magneto-electric battery for locating mines and describing the metals they contain, is now visiting this city. He is accompanied by Dr. Frederick Hiller of San Francisco aud Colonel J, W. Guthrie of Sacramento, who are interested in the working of the invention and are here to three days and have already made a few teats of the contrivance on.different mining claims in this neighborhood, all of which have proven very satisfactory to themselves and to ail thers concerned, In one instance a mine five or six miles from this city was passed over and its character determined by the action of the instrument. The report given by Prof, Kimball ae the result of the experiment was a surprise to the managers: of the mine, who say that they could not have given @ better description of the mine themselves, All teate are conducted above ground, the battery used being very sensitive and easily affected by the mineral deposits in the immediate neighborhood. not class‘his invention with the so-called divining rods, ‘thoo-doos” and like appliances that have in the past attracted more or less attention from mining men all over the country. Prof, Kimball gays the apparatus is constructed upon principles well known to scientific men, and that its working depends entirely upon natural causes, There is no spiritualism or other — tion about it, The Professor also claims that the jie discoveries on the Comstock are due to the use of his instrument, which located new exploited. The apparatus which Professor Kimball uses somewhat resembles in shape the oldtime forked divining rod. There are two adjustable rods which meet in a socket, the free ends are held in the hand and the battery is inserted im the socket at the junction of the two rods. According to the metal which the prospector is looking for he inserts at the apex of the rod a particular kind of battery. This battery looks like a long bullet, but has at its broad end a tight-fitting screw, not unlike the flask in which quicksilver is stored. The contents of the battery constitute the secret of the 36-lb. hammer; throwing 12-lb, hammer; putting 16-lb. shot; 100-yard hurdle race, hurdles three feet wide and three feet apart; rapoing broad jump; running high jump; running hop, step and jump. A number of open-for-all contests will also take place and for these prizes will be given. They are as follows: 100-yard dash; 100yard dach for boys under 16; three-legged race, 100 yards; one-half mile race; running broad jump; ruoning high jump; 50-yard race for girls; egg race for girls; 220-yard wace; high kick; hop, step and jump; putting 16-1b. shot; throwing 12-lb, hammer; dadies’ and girls’ races, A Verdict For Defendant. The case of W. W. Williams vs. R. P, Rossen, which was tried before a jury in Juetice McKinney’s court at, North Bloomfield’ Saturday, resulted in the acquittal of the defendant. Rossen was d of having said that Williams was the party who recently destroyed the brass band instruments at Relief Hill, and the latter brought suit to recover damages for defamation of character. Thomas 8, Ford of this city was attorney for Rossen, and A, Burrows of Grass Valley appeared for the plaintiff. : . Death From P Pneumonia. Rose Carey, a woman of the town, who was commonly known as ‘' Pearl,” died yesterday morning at her house on upper Commercial street.. Death resulted from pneumonia, The unfortunate woman being in almost destitute ¢ircumstances and with no one to see that she was decently buried, Constable Dillon started a subscription and succeeded in raising enough to defray the expenses of the funeral, which took place at 10 o’clock this morning. pow whe It Won’t Prosper. No town can prosper so long as its own -citizens have not a good work to say for it, ,and@ every man should speak kindly of his ‘neighbor and help him in his business when the can do it without injury to himeelf, This ds the secret of every community that thrives and prospers. Very Low. Mrs. F, E. Wadsworth, wife of the editor of the Herald, is stillin a critical condition. Dr. Wallace Briggs of Sacramento is expected here this evening to consult with Dr. Muller, the attending physician, regarding the case. The readers of this p paper will be pleased ates learn = there is-at least one dreaded science has been able to cure in oe its s ye that is Catarrh. J Be Martin mer Ala, ‘force distinct from electricity. ‘illness confined him te his Professor, Into each battery certain chemicals are introduced, which are attracted by certain metals or fluids in the earth. To use the Professor’s own language: ‘‘A nug~ get of gold is a ball of fire, so far as its rays are concerned, All mineral bodies are electrical conductors, and impart a magnetic They produce effects upon the batteries used in the divining rod by magnetic induction. The needle or battery is caught by this inductive force and is spontaneously directed towards the ore body. The greater the mass of ore the greater the effect upon the battery and the more decided the attraction.” In this way the Professor says he is able not only to indicate where the great body of the ore lies, but the direction of the vein, its spars and pockets. He has been working on the apparatus for over five years, but has only been practicing with it for three years, as serious bed for two years. He expresses the utmost confidence in his own ability, plus the magneto-electric battery, and declares that it would .be impossible for him to travel over a body of ore ina railroad train at the rate of 100 miles an hour without the apparatus indicating in the most positive manner the location-of the buried metal, Today Professur Kimball, accompanied . @ by Messrs, Guthrie and Hiller, went out to look at the Muller & Walling claim, about two miles west of this city, and try the apparatus. Professor Muller, one of the owners of the mine, was also of. the party. The apparatus was brought ihto play and by its aid Professor Kimball located the main ledge and followed its course and gave the location of all the ore shoots, the indications of the battery being correct in those instances of which the owners of the mine have positive knowledge. Professor Kimball pointed out from the surface where the ledge was found largest and where the richest quartz was struck, The instrumen indicated everything exactly, so far as known, although the inventor had never been on the ground before and knew nothing about the mine. A cross ledge that the owners were not aware existed there was pointed out and the character and extent of the ore deposit in the undeveloped portion of the mine was indicated, showing that the property is undoubtedly a valuable one, Professor Muller informs us that be was astonished at the accuracy with which the instrument indicated the extent and. course of ore shoots and the description of the ore given by Professor Kimball. Consens btiah LaGrippe, Pasumenin, and The inventor does} electric wire? What has kept thie district mine the gentlemen went to Grass Valley . . pr areas diseases are cured by livered a very interesting lecture at Grass Valley from which we extract the following: On the South Yuba River, 1,000 feet below. the level of this city, the Nevada County Electric Power pany is now
generating 3,000 horse power, This energy is capable of being transmitted by electric wire to the top of « mountain or to the bottom of a valley, One-third of that energy ishere. Init you havea power that will work any of ‘your mines, irrespective of looation. 1+ is also associated with a light that is second only to the rays of the sun. Graes Valley is a place that has been most productive and self-sustaining for 47 years; that is unequaled in its resources and unparalleled in its wealth; a place which, though only a small portion of ‘its mineral area has been developed, that portion has for the past twenty years taken care of its inhabitants, and contributed Lirgely to the welfare of many of the ontside, What will not Grass Valley accomplish now that every part of the district is made available for development by the back for so long is the known fact that there is a superfluity of water to handle in it. Now that there is plenty o power there-will be no end to the development, The gold is here, and the world needs gold, Then again, look at the town iteclf, Where can you fiud a more beautiful spot, or a more healthy climate? And where do you see prettier homes and more contented people? And why is this? Because the people of Grass Valley are all workers, full of ambition and ‘‘electrio energy.” Pending the introduction of electric power many of our citizens, who couldn’t stand the dormant strain on their energies, were induced to fire their storage batteries with Grass Valley energy and experience, and to transport them to Johannesburg in South Africa, They have helped those people a great deal over there: When they return home I fear that camp will be deserted— Johannesburg will be a thing of past history—when Grass Valley will be but in the prime of life and prosperity, The electric energy of our people, sisi with an electric energy that is generated from a natural source, will supply all power necessary to develop the mineral resources of this district to perfection, and cause many people seeking investments to come and share with us the favorable conditions found here,—good fortune, good climate and good health, With plenty of light and power, and living in a locality where both can be profitably utilized, what greater privilege can be desired by the introduction of electricity ? Married Sunday. R. A. Paine and Miss Annie Waldron were united in the holy bonds of matrimony yesterday at the home of the latter at Lake City, Rev. Father Cline performed the marriage ceremony. Beth are among the most popular and best-known young people along the Ridge, and they have a host of friends‘and acquaintances in this city. The bride is not only comely but is attractive and accomplished, while the groom is one of the rising young men of his section. Mr, and Mrs, Waldron will] * continue to reside at Lake City and will be kept busy for some time receiving the congratulations of their friends. ~@oHigh-Toned. Geo, A. Gray, the undertaker, and Henry Lane, the livery stable man, put on ‘theap of style” Sunday last, Instead of waiting at Colfax for the regular train and arriving here at 10 o’clock in the forenoon, they reached here at 3 o'clock in the morning, having come by a special train to Grass Valley and from there by special conveyance.
