One of the largest contracts for machinery ever made by a Oalifornia
mining company was signed on Saturday by the Union Iron Works of San
Francisco and W. P. Hammond of Oroville, General Manager for the Boston and Oroville Gold Dredging Company. The contract is “for four
great mining dredgers to cost $200,000.
The machines will be the heaviest and
largest ever yet made by the. Risdon
people and will work a “face” 60 feet
in depth. The Boston and Oroville
company owns the largest tract of
dredging land of any company in the
world, its holdings comprising 2000
acres adjacent to Oroville and on both
sides of the Fedther river; also 1000
ecres on Bear river near Wheatland.
The company already has two dredgers
here, one of which, the Continental,
has been operating for several months,
while the other is just completed. Two
of the machines for which the econtracts have just been closed will be
built here while the other two will go
to Bear river.—Oroville Mercury.

Ohe WJarks Children Have the
Disease ina Wild Form.
As stated in last evening’s TRANSORIPT, smallpox has appeared in the
Marks family, who reside on Myer’s
ravine, abcut three miles from the
city limits. Three of the patients are
recovering and the fourth is showing
Symptoms of the dread disease. Yosterday evening County Health Officer
J.T. Jones and Dr. O. L. Muller went
out to the Marks residence. T ey
found that the disease was in a mild
form. The older children were about
recovered, but the youngest, a baby,
was just taking the disease. The physicians made-a thorough examination
of the premises, which they found to
be ina vile condition and most unsanitary. The {place was quarantined
and a close watch will be kept and
every precaution taken to prevent the
spread of the disease.
It is supposed that the disease was
contracted at the Van Slyke ranch in
Penn Valley, bya son of the Marke
family, who visited that place recently.
Mrs. Marks told some of her friends
not long agothat her children were
afflicted with the disease, but it seems
evident that ap effort was being made
to kept the matter from the general
public.
Paul Schoen, the well-known piano
