Smith, a young miner who lives on Deer Creek, about three miles from Grass Valley, was killed this morning in the W. Y. O. D. mine, which is situated about a mile front Grass Valley. He was at work at the 800-foot stope in company with Al‘bert Scoble and -William Grenfell. They were timbering the stope and as young Smith was about to pick up a timber, a rock, weighing about fourhundred pounds, fell from overhead and struck the unfortunate young man, nearly burying him. “He was killed instantly. It was found that the right side of his skull was mashed his right cheek bone broken, his right jaw dislocated,and his right hip broken. The gentlemen who were working with him were off a little to ‘one side and were not hurt, © : The deceased was one of the patriotic young men of Company I, N.G.C., which was called out during the Spanish-American War. He was about 25 years of age and was respected by all who knew hin. He leaves a mother, Mrs. Maggie Marsh, a sister, Miss Maggie Smith, and a brother Joseph Smith, also several half brothers and sisters, all of whom live on Deer Creek. Frank Taylor, manager of the Commercial fea Company opened the new Cea store this morning, and did a very nice business for a starter. The place is handsomely fi:ted up and presents a very attractive appearance both inside and out. Mr. Taylor has received a large coffee roaster from the East, and he proposes to roast coffee right in the store, and will also blend teas. In order to introduce the splendid line of goods, each-pyarchaser will be presented with a fine box of candy, as will be observed by the advertisement in this evening’s TRANSORIPT. TAYLOR, Manager. 6 AN onpant Hi Open a Wooks Engagement Commencing Monday Evening, The Madison Square Company will commence a weeks’ engagement at the Theatre in this city on Monday evening next. It is a firat class company, ‘and ‘everywhere they play ‘they are greeted with crowded houses. The Red Blaff News has this to say about them: The second night of the Madison Square Theater Co, was better than. the first, in the presentation of the play as well as the size of
the audience. “Jerry the Tramp was the attraction, and it was a good one, moving the audience at times-into fits of laughter, at others to flowitig of tears. The play has its sympathetic side as well as its comedy, and the large audience is in all respects was thoroughly satisfied with it. The playing has some splendid actors, and there are many veteran “‘all-the-weekers” who believe the Madisons are the best players the town has had for many years. The prices would seem to rate the company as cheap—10, 20 and 30 cents—but really that is the only cheap thing to it. : eee Sunday at the National. Tomorrow the National Hotel at this city will serve a fine chicken dinner. San BERNARDINO, May 18.—In the case of the People vs. Hieronymous Hartmann, the jury retur ed.a verdict of guilty of bigamy, after having been out five hours. Hartman lived with Mary Powers Hartman from 1869 to 1897 and when he separated from. her and divided up his property with her, and married enother woman. Mary Powers Hartmann siid she was married to the defendant at Oamp Cody in the presence of witnesses, one of whom, Lafayette Mercham, corroborated her statement. Hartmann said it was. merely a contract of cohabitation, and that there was no ceremony. The parties have all been well known in this county for many years, Spread of Cholera.
