CRUSHED 70 DEATH.
Henry L. Smith Loses His His Life at
the W. Y. 0. D. Mine,
Henry. Smith, a young miner who
lives on Deer Creek, about three miles
from Grass Valley, was killed this
morning in the W. Y. O. D. mine,
which is situated about a mile front
Grass Valley. He was at work at the
800-foot stope in company with Al‘bert Scoble and -William Grenfell.
They were timbering the stope and as
young Smith was about to pick up a
timber, a rock, weighing about fourhundred pounds, fell from overhead
and struck the unfortunate young
man, nearly burying him. “He was
killed instantly. It was found that
the right side of his skull was mashed
his right cheek bone broken, his right
jaw dislocated, and his right hip broken.
The gentlemen who were working with
him were off a little to ‘one side and
were not hurt, © :

young men of Company I, N.G.C.,
which was called out during the Spanish-American War. He was about 25
years of age and was respected by all
who knew hin. He leaves a mother,
Mrs. Maggie Marsh, a sister, Miss Maggie Smith, and a brother Joseph Smith,

Hi Open a Wooks Engagement Commencing
Monday Evening,
The Madison Square Company will
commence a weeks’ engagement at the
Theatre in this city on Monday evening
next. It is a firat class company,
‘and ‘everywhere they play ‘they are
greeted with crowded houses.
The Red Blaff News has this
to say about them: The second night
of the Madison Square Theater Co,
was better than. the first, in the presentation of the play as well as the size of
the audience. “Jerry the Tramp was
the attraction, and it was a good one,
moving the audience at times-into fits
of laughter, at others to flowitig of
tears. The play has its sympathetic
side as well as its comedy, and the
large audience is in all respects was
thoroughly satisfied with it. The playing has some splendid actors, and there
are many veteran “‘all-the-weekers”
who believe the Madisons are the best
players the town has had for many
years. The prices would seem to rate
the company as cheap—10, 20 and 30
cents—but really that is the only cheap
thing to it. :
