NeEvaDA City DaiLty TRANSCRIPT BROW WN & CALEINS, PRoPrierors, Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City. TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTIONI $6 Per Year . By Cerrier, Delivered to any part of the city. Sy se we 12 1-2c Per Week WONT AY oo seis c bo capo skeen SLE Cevptouseesds ie T os esewest 1902 aaatiaiiea ALL SHOULD VOTE For the High Sehool Measure e O-MORROW IS THE DAY when the voters of Nevada School District will vote on the proposition of establishing and maintaining our High School on a modern and legal basis, and all indications point to the fact that the measure will be carried by an overwhelming majority—probably by an almost unanimous vote. The big wave of popular sentiment in favor of the proposed High School augurs a great and brilliant victory at the ballot box tomorrow for the people of Nevada City, who, we believe, are unanimously in favor of promoting and supporting the cause of standard High School education in our public schools. The subject has been intelligently discussed by able public speakers and the DAILY TRANSCRIPT have devoted considerable space in explaining all points of the question which were not already clear to our readers and has indorsed the proposition from the first time it was advocated. We believe that all the objections advanced by the few, who thought the improvement useless and unnecessary, have been satisfactorily answered, and that nearly every voter in this school district feels thoroughly convinced that it is his duty to loyally and vigorously support the High School movement and vote for it tomorrow. There may be some, however, who are still outside the High School fold, and, like many other sinners, may be converted even at the eleventh hour. The Educational Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, of which E. J. Rector. is chairman and Geo. B, Finnegan, secretary, prepared an article in which answers all the main objections to the proposed establishment of the new High School, and from which we condense the following facts: First—There is not to be any High School at Glen-= breok. It will remain in Nevada City, just as it is now. Second—No new building will be needed. The money raised by the extra taxation is to be paid out to the teachers of the High School, who are now being illegally paid out of the State school fund. Third—Every voter within the boundaries of Nevada school district is entitled to vote tomorrow.’ Many have the wrong impression that only those living within the city limits are entitled to vote. +~ . ; Fourth—All votes will be polled at Washington school house, and not at the precinct polling places. Fifth—The polls will open at 8 o’clock a. m. and close at sundown—7:14 p. m. Sixth—The passing of this measure is for the benefit of the lower grades, as all the money now being used for the High School will be utilized fer their benefit. Children will then be able to attend school all day and the overflow in classes, which are ‘now crowded, ‘will be remedied. Seventh—The assessed valuation of this district is approximately $1,175,000. The tax of twenty-cents on the one hundred dollars will raise $3,172.50, which amount is sufficient to replace the money that is being kept from the grammar schools. The cost to a taxpayer who is assessed for $400 will amount to $1.08 per year, but as: we have been paying ten cents on the hundred dollars for school bonds, which were paid for this year, the additional tax really amounts to only 68 cents in this case. Other assessments will be in proportion. Eighth—It should be borne in mind that the High School as now managed and supported shall not be allowed to continue after the end of the present year. Ninth—Should any’ of the school districts around Nevada City desire to pariicipate in the benefits of a High School they can gain this privilege by making arrangements with the Board of Trustees of this district. Tenth—A Deputy County Clerk will be at the polls tomorrow to register votes, so that no one need lose ‘his vote because of not being registered, Sold Today. ‘The property of Valentine Scheurman was sold at noon today at Sheriff's sale to satisfy a judgment obtained Would Smash the Club. Grass Valley won the third game of the season from the Nevadas yesterday, by a score of 18 to 8. About as large a crowd was present as witnessed the first game. The ecoreis ne indication as to who should have won the game, for Nevadas certainly would have won the game but for Noak’s poor playing on third. However, Noack has been shifted about in every game, having played in different positions im each of the three games, Ballestero pitched for the home team, and again demonstrated his superiority over Overmyer. He struck out ten men as -against Overmyer’s one, and was batted for ten hits, the same number which the home team got off Overmeyer. Overmyer, by the way, could not strike out the Nevadas as he did a week ago, forevery one of them hit him when it came their turn to. batGrass Valley was “strengtbened” by Mike Birmingham of the Sacramento league team, on first, but the other new mean, Fiscell; on third, did not compare with Kaphan. Dan Stewart won the several prizes offered by knocking the first home run of the season. On the part of the Nevadas, the: new man, Galenda, proved himself to be aa fast, if not faster, than any man on the field yesterday. He certainly is a good sticker, and in fielding he played Morrow te a standstill at short, for he covered three times as much ground. O’Connor was off in his catching and throwing, and seemed bewildered whenever a foul fly was knocked, which fact was probably caused by the noise and firecrackers. These features of the games should certainly be stopped as they mar the interest taken, as people wisb to krow what the pleys are. Yesterday a person could not tell whether the umpire declared a ball er a strike. This might seem idle talk but people who are interested enough in baseball to goto the games should not be annoyed by: cowbells, gongs, firecrackers and such like. It is an old fashioned idea and the management should stop it. The crowd also should be kept outside the rail so as to give everyone achanceto see the game. ; To describe the game in detail would be uninteresting-as the official score ‘below gives the game in fall, NEvapDaAs.
