The origin of the old saying, “Going scot free,” is this: Scot, from the Anglo-Saxon “sceot,” a portion, signified in old law'a customary tax or contribution laid on subjects according to their ability and embraced all parochial assessments. The conclusion is obvious—namely, that to escape “scot free” was to avoid all such payments of dues and taxes. The origin of the old saying, “Going scot free,” is this: Scot, from the Anglo-Saxon “sceot,” a portion, signified in old law'a customary tax or contribution laid on subjects according to their ability and embraced all parochial assessments.
