~The Recital Given by Mrs, Renfro in the
Blue Room of the Union Hotel.
Two hundred and fifty people are under
obligations to Mrs. De Witt Renfro; two
hundred_and fifty -people-were treated—to-a
musical luxury last night, ‘
Tt was a large and fashionable gathering
that assembled in the Blne room of thé
Union Hotel last night. All classes of
society were represented and a more intel.
ligent and appreciative audience could not
he found in the interior of this State. Anx—________i9us parents of the participants were pres—
and craned their necks when the doting
son or daughter appeared onthe floor and
gave expression, it may have been the first
time with some of them, to some angelic
chord, It was evident that the pupils of
Mrs. Renfro were not without’ friends in
the large and critical audience, for there was
clapping of hands and stamping of feet at
the conclusion of each performance until
the applause became deafening. Encores
were prolific and the gay assemblage was
restive and dissatisfied until there was a
recognition on the part of the recipient,
either by a song or a graceful bow. The
pupils acquitted themselves admirably,
They each one gave evidence of exceptional
vocal ability and musical skill. And when
we remember that it was the debut of some
of these™ youthful aspirants to vocal and
musical fame, their first appearance before
a public audience, and every one who has
been on a public plaiform for the first time
knows what that implies, we are prepared
to give them unusual credit for their musical achievments: There was no cause for
complaint and no reason for criticism other
than of a friendly character, In the words
of an old white-haired sinner who remarked
to the writer after the entertainment:
“Ido not see why people wish to go to
heaven when they have-such angelic voices
here on earth,”
The concert was a decided success from
a musical and vocal standpoint; ‘The selections ‘were rendered with precision and
good taste, Some of them were gems of
vocalism and gaye expression to vocal ability of exceptional merit, We are sorry that
our limited space prevents a detailed description of each performer’s ability, but the
people of this city are indebted to Mrs,
Renfro and her pupils for an evening of
unalloyed pleasure. Credit is also due to
Mr, and Mrs, J. A, Northway for the elaborate arrangements they had made and for
the hospitable manner in which they received their guests, Kverything conducive
to the comfort of the guests was prepared
by them, é

THE ORO FINO MINE,
After Remaining Unworked Several Yeats
Is Being Operated Again, =
Operations are to be resumed soon on the
Oro Fino quartz mine, situated near Rush
creek, about three miles from this city in a
westerly direction. This mine was originelly known aw the Curry ledge. Several
years ago it was purchased by R. E. Robinson, H. G. Battey and others, and the name
changed te Oro Fino. Under the manage~
ment at that time considerable work was
done. An incline shaft was sunk 400 feet
and levels epened to the 300 station. Hoisting and pumping machinery was put up
and for a while a Huntington rotary mil]
was used, but owing tothe character of the
quartz this grinding apparatus did not give
very satisfactory results and was displaced
later by a five-starip battesy, which was
subsequently removed,
About seven years ago Robinson and
partners suspended operations, since which
time, until within the past few months,
there has been but little, if any, work done
there, Very rich quarta.was taken out at
different times during Robinson’s management, some of it being well filled with free
gold and carrying high-grade sulphurets,
A crushing of ore taken out recently yielded
between $15 and $20 per ton. ;
The present owners of the mine are Hon.
getting ready to work it in a thorough and
systematic manner, firmly -believing the
property will prove a paying one, Last
Tuesday they purchased a ten-stamp mil]
fromthe St, -John Mining Company of
Grags Valley, The mill was formerly owned
by the Murchie Company, and still remains
on that company’s ground, the St, John Co,
making different arrangements after buying
it. It is not the mill that the Murchie
Company are now using. The outfit is being
taken down and will be thoroughly overhauled and put up at the Oro-Fino. On
the quartz dump there are now between 150
and 200 tons of fine-looking quartz, which
with a good mill and ‘other facilities near at
hand, will, it is thought, pay well,
As soon as the mill ig erected and ready
to run, it is intended to put more men _to
work °in the mine and take out enough
quartz from the five-foot ledge to keep the
stamps dropping night and day.
Thus one by one the old mines that have
not been worked for years are being operated
again, and in every instance better results
are noted than when they were formerly
worked, We hope soon to be able to chronicle the fact that. the unworkéd Banner,
which has never been thoroughly opened, }
and which at one time gave employment tu
about 200 men, will be operated again; also
the Sneath & Clay, another old but partially
developed property, which at one time employed a large force of men. When this is
done it will demonstrate what is generally
believed; that these two mines, if thoroughly opened, will prove to be second only
to the Providence, Champion and Nevada
City mines, All that ig needed to bring
these old and idle claims to the front again
is for parties to get hold of them who have
the requisite capital at command and have a
proper knowledge of quartz mining, as well
as good business sense and management,

WORK JS PROGRESSING.
Preparations Being Made at the Morning
Star For Machinery,
The shaft at the Morning Star mine, on
Gold Flat, is being increased in size to 8x5
feet, with two compartments, and ig being
timbered in a therough .and substantial
manner.Baldwin & Son, in prospecting
the mine, sank an incline 87 feet, and this
is the shaft that is now being made larger.
A windlass is being used for hoisting, but
when the change is made the full depth the
hoisting works will probably be in readiness
to do this work. It will be mecessary to
put the pump in then, as considerable water
is encountered at that depth. 3
Besides the miners engaged in enlarging
the shaft others are at work sinking prospect holes at different points, Carpenters
are erecting a building that is to be used as
an office and boarding house, Superintendent Senn will stop there, also Mr, Hamllton, one of the principal stockholders, who
with his wife will have charge of the boarding house, If any of the miners or other
employes desire to stop at the boarding
house they can do. go, but they will be at
liberty to do as they please in this matter.
The machinery of the hoisting works and
mill will be run by water power, A pipe
line of nearly 4,000 feet will be run from
the South Yuba Water Company’s reservoir
John Caldwell and John Curry, They are . on the hil] above, which will give a pressure
of from 380 to 390 teet, As soon as the
hoisting works are up work will begin on
the mill,
