BOX E Ohe Caidese Put an American Flag Above Gheir Emblem. “Oid Glory” now wavesin New China Town, having been pat on the top of the high pole at that place over a large Chinese Mason flag. On the 6th day of last August the local Chinamen raised a large flag on the pola and neglected to put the stars and stripes above it. This curdled the blood of some young patriotic Americans who deemed it an insult on account of the strained con dition of affairs which existed at that time between this country and China, and on the evening of the next day they went to China Town forty strong e@od demanded the Chinaman in charge of the Joss House to put an American flag above ihé Chinese emblem. He beCame insulting and refused to do as into sight to help show his authority. He was quickly shown that the young and the flag was lowered and torn in small pieces,many of them being saved for souvenirs. Personal Pointers. The Masons of Nevada City lodge last night fittingly celebrated the tiftieth anviyersary of the institatiag of their lodge and at the same tine dedicated their new banquet hall. The families of the members were present, 8 was alsoa number of Grass Valley Masons and their families, An excelof well-kuown Grass Valieyans taking part. It was one of the grandest events iu the history of the local lodze and all who were present will hold fond recolections of the-good time they had for mauy years to come, Will of J. H. Baudonin, The will of the late Jean Henri Baudouin of Boston Ravine was admitted’ to probate in the Superior Court today. The estate consists of a life insurance of $2000, real estate valued at $400 and bousebold furniture worth about $100. ‘The decedent bequeathed the eutire estate to the widow. The following appraisers bave been appointed: J. Mulroy, W. Dibble and A.Jobnuston. An order was also made t> publish due notice to creditors. S4n Francisco, May 2—The Jenny Lind Gold Mining yesterday closed a deal here whereby it secures possession of eighty acres of the "saac’L, Weed ranch on Alta Hill. The company has had this piece of land bonded for some months, and yesterday the purchase Mr. Weed conveys to the company all the water ditches, quartz and gravel rights, etc., to the land. By the purchase of this tract the Jenny Lind company now has a claim of 6500 feet on the trend ofthe ledge. which is situated in Grass Valley mining district, are said to be very bright just at the present time, and by the addition of this new ground the company is in a position to work tor a number of years, and it is believed its efforts to make a dividend-paying property of the Jenny Lind will be crown. Prospects at the mine, Well Pleased. D. &. Moore Ghinks Favorably of Prospects. D. E. Moore of Salt Lake, Utah, who has beenup at Washington examining mining properties in that district, re turned to this city today, and expresses bimself as weli satisfied with the prospects, and is of the opinion that they wiil compare favorably with any in the county, which is saying a great deal. He came here in the interest of Colorado capitalists, and will return to that place and make. his report, when companies will be organized and the properties developed. Local Notes. Some steel shoes and dies for the Reward mine arrived here today. Officer Carr will ring the curfew at 9 o’vlock from now on instead of at 8 o’clock. Robert Latta and Thomas Coan of this city are opening up a mine in Willow Valley mining district. Walter Palmer yesterday resigned his position as. clerk at the New York hotel and has been succeeded by W. TL. BurraLo, N.Y, May 1—The gates of . the Pan American Exposition were thrown open this morning and notwithstanding it had rained all night and the conditions were threatening, the attendance was large. WILLEmMsTapD, Curacoa, April 80—Dr. Vicente Mijares, the editor of the Re publica, a Venezuelan organ, which was earnetly defending the New York and Bermudez Company, has been arrested at Caracas by order o: President Castro. This arrest has caused a censation in Caracas, where Dr. Mijares is held-in the highest esteem. The new Venezuelan Constitution, came into force April 19h. At present the Republic is tranquil, but the Government officikls evidently feat trouble, as they continue uoremittingly to purchase arms. A German ship which passed here a few dys ago on her way to Venezuela had 10,000 Mauser rifles and 2,000,000 cartridges on board.+General Andrade, the former President of Venezuela, ig here with General Riveria. A complication with Oolombia ‘8 very much feured, as President Castro lends all the encouragement he can to the Colombian Revolutionary Party. ‘ Clark Again G. nfotned, Sat Lake, Utab, May 1.—Pennel Cherrington, Assistant United States Attorney, received a telegram from Nevada today stating that United States Marshal Emmett, of Oarson City, had served injunction papers upon Colonel Maxson, leader of the Clark forces, restraining them from interfecing in aby manner with the employes of tbe Oregon Short Line, who. are engaged in extending the Short Line in a south westerly direction through the State of Nevada. Attorney Cherrington says the Clark people will andoubtedly obey the order of the Court and vacate the disputed right of way. Sovernment Satistied, 3 WasHINGTON, May 1—The State Department bas received from the Government of Venezuela a satisfacturs explanation of the circumstances under which Ignacio Baiz, United States Consular Agent at Barcelona, came to be arrested and muicted of a heavy fine. While no detuils are furnished, it is stated that the action of the Venezuelan Government im the matter is all that could be desired aud that Biiz, who bas recovered or will recover the money extorted from him, will not be farther molested. Bound By Rurglars. Cuicaaco, May 1—A special to the Tribune from Adrian, Mich., says: Two masked men entered the residence of Mrs. Ruth Ayers at Springville, where she lived alone, bound and gagged her and raneacked the house, ‘Lhey obtained about $8000 in gold currency. She was assessed at $40,000, and it is known that she always kept a large amount of money about the house. There is no clew to the robbers. Woodmen of the World. Mr. Weeks intends to make this his “home county,” in order to. be near his young family who are being educated here, and he will make his abstract plant a model one in every’ particular, and second to none on the Pacific Coast. He is a widely-known expert in his profession, having had sixteen years continuous experience, and having daring that time equipped many counties in this State, including Sacramento, Kings, Alameda, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Ventura and others, besides having sold county rights in over thirty others. Assoon as he has completed the necessary arrangements and secured offices in one of the fire-proof buildings in this city, Mr. Weeks will engage a force of copyists sufficient to have the plant completed and ready for business before the end of the present year, and he assures the TRaNsoriPT that as soon as his plant is:completed if any man in Nevada county buys a bad title, ora title with any faw in it orcloud upon it, it will be his own fault. Civil Engineer Dead. New York, May 1—William F. Davidson,a well known civil engineer, who assisted in laying out the route of the Uniou Pacific railroad, died in Belevue Hospital last evening from injuries received by being knocked down by a horse and wagon. Loxpon, May 1.—A dispatch from Lord Kitchener says: Grenfell attacked the Boers -at Bergplantz, near Halvereburg, where the last Long Tom opened fire at 10,000 yards. Kitchener’s scouts advanced to 8000 yards when the gun was blown up and the Bours fled Ten of them were made prisoners. Other columns report ten Boers killed,
