Ohe Caidese Put an American
Flag Above Gheir Emblem.
“Oid Glory” now wavesin New China
Town, having been pat on the top of
the high pole at that place over a large
Chinese Mason flag. On the 6th day of
last August the local Chinamen raised
a large flag on the pola and neglected
to put the stars and stripes above it.
This curdled the blood of some young
patriotic Americans who deemed it an
insult on account of the strained con
dition of affairs which existed at that
time between this country and China,
and on the evening of the next day
they went to China Town forty strong
e@od demanded the Chinaman in charge
of the Joss House to put an American
flag above ihé Chinese emblem. He beCame insulting and refused to do as
into sight to help show his authority.
He was quickly shown that the young
and the
flag was lowered and torn in small
pieces, many of them being saved for
souvenirs.
