After a to, Yesterday. ee The fitth anniversary of the planting of the Memoria} Grove in Capital Park, Sacramento, saya the Bee, was celebrated with impressive ceremenies. by the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic yesterday afternoon, There was au immense Crowd {in atshort speesh Mrs, Belle S. Herr, Rev. W. K, la pastor of the Sixth-Street Methodist Oburch followed with a fervid invocation. The oration was delivered by Assistant At'orney-General Charles TN. Post, one of the very best orators iu Oaliternia. His peroration was as follows: “It was a beautiful and poetic in*p'ration that promp‘ed Mrs, Elisa H. Waggoner, of Edward’ Roby Circle, Ladies of the G. A. R., of Sacramento, to suggest the planting of this MemoTial Grove, thus blendiug the most beautifal production of Nature into a living, growing monument to valor and patriotism. “The surprisingly rapid and luxurious growth of this Memorial Grove would seem to indicate that the very eoil and elements of California respond sensibly to patriotic sentiment, and are ‘actually permeated with the same undying love of country aud reverence for loity and patriotic deeds which dis. tinguished ber people ; and, coming as these trees d> from battlefields once drenched with the blood of heroes, their roots nourished, perhaps, by the ensanguined flood, I might say, with Omar Kbayyam : I sometimes think that never blows so red The rose as where some buried Caceer bled. “As time rolled on and the seasons Wwex and wane, and these trees shall strengthen, and grow in size and beauty, and the benificent effects flowing from the events which they commemorate are more and more fully understood and appreciated, this spot will become a shrine at which all true American men and women will ancover their beads and in their heart of hearts and firmly resolve that ** ‘Liberty and Usion, now and forever, one and inseparable’ shall be the abibboleth of their national faith.” Then followed the planting of a tree from the home of the late President McKinley, at Canton, Ohio, by Secretary of State Chas. F. Curry, assisted by thirty little school children. Secretary Ourry delivered an address, in which he said: “The people of the United States, particularly the people of California and more particularly the people of Sac-, ramento, are under great obligations’ to Mrs. Waggoner and other noble women of the Grand Army of the Republic for the existence of this beautiful and sacred Memorial Grove composed of trees gathered from each of the great battlefields of the Civil War. We of the North of another generation admire the heroism and devution of the Confederates to their cause and the sone of Confederates are today gied that during the late war with Spain they marched side by side with the sons of the Northern veterans un-. der tke Stars and Stripes, “The South believed their cause was right, but the arbitrament of arms determined in favor of ‘Liberty and Unjon, now and forever, one and I{nsep-; arable.’ “Our late martyred President, Wm. McKinley, did not permit sectional feeling nor political prejudices to warp bis judgment and as a result ex-Confederute and ex-Union officers wore the American uniform, and both assisted in freeing Cuba of Spanish misrule. Since tbe war with Spain this again is indeed oue country. “We are here today to plant a tree to the memory of that model American Chrietian gentleman, our martyred President William McKinley. William McKinley was great in every -walk of life, as a son, asa brother, as a soldier, asa lawyer, as a statesman, as President and as husband, His domestic life was an ideal lifeand under his administration as President the United States prospered as no other country hes prospered before in a similar length of time. “This tree which we plant to this man’s memory today was sent to Mrs. Woeggoner and the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic by McKinley ‘Post, No 25, of Oauton, Obio. It is from the McKinley homestead in Oanton, Mey ittake root and thrive ia California soil and may the children and the children’s children of those present today bask under its shadow may future generations imbibe principles of true Americanism and patriotism.” TT bright eye keeps her bowels active ee her stomach in good order Lane’s Tea is a pleasant laxative ane a great digestive aid.
