R. ARTHUR MoDONALD., a specialist in the United States Bureau of
Education, made a report r-cently to Congress on the increase of
suicide, insanity and other forms of abnormality. In giving his
opinion of some of the causes of the increase Dr. McDonald says: ‘The rapid
development of society is possibly one of the main causes of the increaee of
crime and abnormality; it includes a great number of new inventions, increased opportunities for travel, and the enterprise of the press, enabling us to
read all the news of the world at ease. It was quite otherwise fifty years ago
