But distance and the cold eastern climate
have dampened the ardor and changed the
views of the Senator on this important subject. Safe from the criticisms of the bimetallic press he is willing to retract much
of what he formerly said in favor of the
metal; He now advocates ‘‘sound money.”
He has adopted the fashionable illusion of the
gold monometallists and has come out in
favor of sound money. In a recent interview he said—‘‘I believe in bi-metallism
when consistent with sound money.’ Everybody knows what the phrase sound money
implies since Cleveland's famous Chicago
epistles. The only obstacle is that it lacks a
definition and Senator Elkins is as helpless
in this respect as the other gold mouometallists. ¢

sound. Thay found no defects whatever in
his cerebrum and concluded that_his -muchvaunted insanity was feigned for reasons
obvious to the criminal. The report of
their investigation will be received. with
gratification in this ‘county. We have a
particular interest in the fate of this human
fiend, and we are anxioes to see stern justice meted out to him at thé expense of his
neck. *
One of the bravest and noblest officers
this county evey possessed met a cruel death
at the hands of this villianous assassin, His
identification in San Francisco proved beyond a reasonable doubt that he murdered
Sheriff Pascoe. He it was who led that
gallant and fearless officer into ambush and
then shot him to make his escape. We
hope that. he will hang by the neck until he
is dead. Then will the death of two innocent and patriotic men be avenged by justice. a

The Coming Issue.
—_— *
If present indications count for anything,
and the adage ‘that coming events cast
their shadows before” is true, then the next
campaign, which is a Presidential one, will
be contested on the issue of a single gold
standard versus a double standard. This is
the paramount issue, however much the
land are here spending a few days.

when the foundation of the Government was
threatened with disruption and annihilation
by the siccessionists of the South. And
who shall say that the danger to which this
Republic is exposed through the adoption of
the financial system practiced in the effete
monarchies of Europe is not greater than
the civil disagreement and disunion of 1860 ?
The country is as much divided and the
antagonism is as strovg today as it was at
that time. This nation was formed upon
economic principles, upon the success of
which depende its prosperity, and if one of
these vital principles is destroyed an integral part of the Government is extermi-—
nated, The question is; Can we success—
fully erect and sustain the structure with
the corner-stone taken away? This question must be squarely met and answered in
1896. We cannot longer evade the issue.
In this important matter we are the victims
of circumstances. Falling prices, decrease in the value of agricultural land,
contraction of the currency and the appreciation of gold have forced the issue upon
us. We must decide whether we will continue the present dangerous experiment,
whether we are content to be governed by
the insidious monetary influences of the
grasping bondholders and shylocks ef
Europe or whether we will return to the
system adopted by the founders of this
Government. Gold and silver was the

Senator Elkins in California are two different individuals on certain propositions.
While in the metropolis of this State he
submitted, like all other weak statesmen
whe come from the East, to the importunities of the irrepressible newspaper reporter
and consented to parade his views on current subjects for the delectation of the unas . suspecting public. Among other things he
was requested to explain his attitude in relation to the monetary problem, He did so
a@ manner that was evidently satisfactory to; the most rabid bi-metallist.
He stated explicitly that he favored the
coinage of silver at a ratio of 16 to 1, and
that he believed in maintaining the parity
of the two metals, Io other words he favored a double standard of value,
