STARTED IN EARNEST.
Grass Valley Making Preparations to
Celebrate on July 4th.
A very enthusiastic meeting was held
in Grass Valley last evening to arrange for
celebrating on the Fourth of July. Charles
K. Clinch was elected permanént Presi‘dent and H.G. Parsons permanent Secretary. The following were named asa gen~ eral committee to elect sub-committees: Ike
Fiol, W. F. Prisk, E. ‘W. Donnelly, George
; Mainhart, Dan Coffin, Fred M. Miller, M.
M. Mitchell, W.S. Robinson, J] P. Shoemaker, John R, Tyrrell, James Hosking,
S. P. Dorsey.
It was the unanimous sense of the meeting that Goy. Budd be invited to act as
Orator of the Day,
dered issued at once to Company D of Auburn and Company C of Nevada City. to
participate in the celebration,
the various organizations and societies in
the county will be invited to participate,
and it is the intention to make the celebration the grandest ever held in the
county. And it will be done. Judge
Paynter announced that a youug lady had
volunteered to train a number of~children
to sing and to execute a Delsarte drill for
the celebration. Captain Riley’ announced
that Company H and visiting militiamen
would have a sham battle on the afternoon
of the Fourth—most likely at the Colum—
bus schoolhouse. New features in decorations will be introduced, There will be
races and games galore, and fun for all,
Mayor George was elected to take care of
the funds,
OF course
Breathe Easier.
The income taxpayers will now draw a
long breath. They were required to make
oath to their income, ‘That limit expired a
month ago. These returns are said to be
among the greatest curiosities of financial
literature in the world. Large incomes
suddenly dropped down to nominal amounts:
If there are a few exceptions, how are the
amounts to be reclaimed? Funds in some
instances had been set aside for the payment
of the tax. Had the law remained as it
stood after the first decision, something like

As We Predicted.
About a month ago the Transcrier suggested that the people of Grass Valley get
a move on about the 4th of July celebra. .
tion, if they intended inviting Governor
Budd to deliver the oration, Last night
they met atid unanimously concluded to
take that step-after the » Governor had received about a dozen invitations to go to
other places, The probabilities are that
the Governor will spend 4th of July in
Marysville but we think he would have
gone to Grass Valley had not the people
there been so slow about inviting him,

esThe Belle Fountaine.
A crew of six men were put to work at
the Belle Fountaine mine, in Willow Valley
district, yesterday, and it is the intention
of the company owning this property to do
some effective development work this summer, ' There is talk of putting a five-atamp
mill on the property. Some very rich
quartz has been taken out, the last crushing
paying $28 per ton. W. H. Smith and
others are the owners of this mine, ~

McGlashan and Bucknam are writing policies
5. for 25 ‘and 30 per cent discount. . Mr, Lewison is now in San Francisco trying to
arrange matters amicably, but in the meantime the little rate war is going merrily on.
The old companies agree to meet the present cut, and the new agents hint at a further reduction in the future. The people
are content to see the battle goon, and are
cancelling their old policies and taking out
new ones at better rates. If matters are
not settled soon, the greater portion of the
town will have been re-written. Mr. MeGlashan is entitled to all the credit and all
the blame for the new order of things. He
went to San Francisco last Saturday and
secured agencies for a number of ‘companies
that were formerly in the Union. When
interviewed he said: ‘‘No rate_war_is—in—
augurated as yet. The deduction of 25 per
cent on business risks and 30 per cent on
dwellings isa deduction made on account
of the fire system. The old rates were made
when the town had little or no protection
against fire. At present Truckee ‘can fight
a fire better than ninety-five per cent of the
towns on the coast. I have no desire to
engage in the insurance business, but I am
determined that the people who voted for
the fire tax shall get reduced insurance, I
am _ satisfied that our people have been
treated ‘unjustly in the matter. Because
there is a little more money made by local
agents, the rates have been maintained and
our citizens have been compelled to pay
outrageous prices,”

to the severe illness of the bride’s mother,
it was a very quiet affair, only relatives
being present. Rev. J. Sims of the Congregational Chutch performed the ceremony. Miss Annie Dower and Elwell
Holland, brother of the bride, stood up with
the happy couple. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Holland and is a
