Nevapa City Datty TRANSCRIPT ——— WEDNESDAY ... “Issued Every Evening, Sundays. Excepted, at Nevada City. _ great outburst of enthusiasm over the event, an informal Te BROWN & CALEINS, : age ne Fs oo eduecsc. May 21, 1902] (Not Bryan’s 16 to 1, but the new High Sebool’s 16 to 1.) E PEOPLE OF NEVADA CITY were in great glee last night over the great and glorious victory achieved at the ballot box yesterday when the citizens of our school district voted almost unanimously to establish a District High School, to succeed the present one which is being illegally conducted. As as result of the celebration was inaugurated by the enthusiastic pupils of the High and Grammar school grades, who were ably assisted by many of our citizens who were vigorous supporters of the High School cause, and for an hour or two the-streets of our town assumed a Fourth of July appearance. ~s Great interest was manifested over the outcome from the time the counting of the ballots commenced. Large numbers of our people were present as spectators, and many took seats in the room and “kept tab” while the votes were being read off, just to see how the ratio _of the negatives.and_afGrmatives was running ‘The ratio of 16 to 1 prevailed from the start and there were many smiling faces and happy. hearts in Washington school building as a consequence, The total number of ballots cast was 578, and it took just about an hour to count them. Of these, the large and magnificent number of 544 favored the esiablishment of a High School, while but 34 votes were cast against the proposition. ‘ ‘ No wonder everybody feels like singing this patriotic song: STAR SPANGLED BANNER. — Star Spangled Banner’? was written by Francis Scott Key, who witnessed the atéack upon Fort McHenry in 1814 and was inspired by the sight of the siarg and Miripes floating over the fort after firing had ceased, proclaiming an American victory.]} 3. > Pa ea eS = e wrens + 3 SEAS FS . If nothisg, anforeseen happens the erop of all kinds in this county will be enormous, W. H. Smith sent a man out to his prune orchard west of town this morning and he brought in several prane branches, not one of which had been injured by the frost. Mr. Smith has two thousand trees planted on fifteem acres, and . if the frost holds off he will have at least forty tons of pranes this season, and they are ef a fine variety. Joined by a large number of pupils from the lower grades they formed a procession and armed with fish horns, gew-gaws, gongs, whistles and other musical instruments they paraded the streets of our city. Citizens and business men caught the enthusiasm and showed it by exploding all kinds of fireworks—rockets. bombs, firecrackers etc., while liundreds of our people were on hand as spectators. Atthe head of the procession marched Harry Englebright who was appropriately rigged up as a military captain while Carroll Ashburn, as drum major, marched beside him.’ Immediately following was Robert Searls as “Julius Cesar.” Norman Shaw and Ed Baker were costumed as clowns and created much amusement. It was a great jollification and everybody was overflowing with “16-to-1” hilarity.
