i! Nevada City Dai Transcript. —_ VOL. LXVI-=NO, 10287 Senter NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, TUESDAY EVENING, MAY #2, 1894. Established Sept. 6, 1860, by N. P. Brown & Co, THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT Published Every Evening, except Sunday. 4 mm BROWN & CALKINS, « Proprietors. SERVED BY CARRIERS AT 15 Cts. per Week or 60Cts. per Month ’ WHEN PAID IN ADVANCE: SIX DOLLARS PER® YEAR. THE GIRLS DIDN’T KNOW, YOU KNOW, Sorosis Guests From Boston Trg Delmonico’s After 6 Without an Escort. Boston newspaper women are confessedly—and self confessedly—bright, but all of them are not yet up to the ways ang wiles of the metropolis, Several of the leading lights were in attendance at the anniversary brealsfast of Sorosis Monday, a number of them coming over several days earlier to see a few of the sights of the town. They were entertained with liberal hospitality—breakfasts, luncheons, dinners, receptions and theater parties, etc. ‘ With characteristic Boston independence, however, a -few of-them decided to devote “one evening to an outing on their own account. After much discussion it was ‘finally decided to dine at Delmonico’s,._ Five of them started out from the Waldorf one evening with that object in view. They filed majestically through : the Fifth avenue entrance of the famous restaurant, but were immediately confronted by a. male being with an-imposing expanse of shirt front, who calmly informed them that they could not be admitted. The blood of the Puritans was at boiling point ina minute. What, they, the ' representatives of Boston’s intellect, culture and intelligence, denied admittance to a New York restaurant! It was not to be borne. Were they not welcome at. Parker’s, at Young’s, at the Vendome and at othor shrines of Hub hospitality, and should they be denied entrance . here? An explanation was demanded. The gnardian of the portal gave it kindly, bnt._. firmly. It-was after the-mystic hour when no woman could be admitted within Del’s sacred precincts without an es‘coft, and no exception could be made even for such distinguised guests, Meekly they withdrew, having acquired a new wrinkle in the way of New York’s customs. Over what they said let the ‘veil of secrecy be-thrown. What they they thought may be left to the imagination.—New York Telegram. “Labby’s” Opinion of Astor. Far from having any objection to an American millionaire” spending his money with us, I should be delighted if all. large owners, of house property. in New York were to follow the example of Mr. Astor. Ifeel indeed personally obliged to him, for he provides me with a well edited magazine and newspaper, the latter, I should .imagine, costing more than the penny which I pay for it. But my gratitude does not quite blind me to the ludicrous absurdity of an American citizen devoting his means to the laudation of an institution like that of. hereditary legislators and to preach“. It now appears that all the Chinese regis=. over again. Under the Geary law the whole CHINESE REGISTRATION. It Is Said to Have Been Mlegally Performed. tration in-the country will have to be done question of making rules for its enforcement was left to the Secretary of the Treasury. The rules regularly promulgated by Secretary Carlisle, but they included no authorization for the administration of the prescribed oath by the Collector of Internal Revenue or his deputies. These officers are empowered to administer oaths in internal revenue cases only, and are expressly foibidden to administer an oath on an _ontside matter. As the Geary Exclusion law is a matter not connected with the collection of internal revenue, the validity of registration oaths administered by Collectur and_ their deputies has been called in question, In case this contention is sustained by the courts the work of registration will have to be done-all over again. ' And the further fact that the United States did a wrong in passing a second law for their registration, when they refused to obey-the first law, is. proven by the fact that in the new registration thousands of Chinese have registered themselves a dozen times, and fraudulent registration certifi-. cates to Chinese laborers are now being sold by smugglers in Canada and Havana to enable them. to enter the United States in safety. The total registration of Chinese laborers in the United States is 105,313, a number nearly equal to the total ‘Chinese population of the country in the last census. No one believes that one-third of them has been registered, but the duplicates in registration have been accomplished-for the purpose of bringing so many more to the country. THE Montgomery Shingle Mill at Seattle has been Lurned. Deafness Cannot be Cured — the diseased portion of the éar. There is only one way to cure Deafness, and that is ‘by constitutional remedies. ~ Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling souud or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tubé restored to its normaf*condition, hearing will be destroyed forever ; nine cases out of ten are caused hy catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. : We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused .by eatarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Cure. MOUNTAIN RETREAT e ..-In the Vicinity of Castle Crags & Mt. Shasta. Read what the Rev. J. K. McLean, M Pastor of’ the First Congregationa} Church, Oakland, says of it : Haze. Creek, April 14, 1894. I am more than pleased with it— delighted. The place seems to me to embody all available points for a camp— dry, firm soil, good water (the very best); fine chances for dreinage, and scenery unsurparsable, The view of Mt. Shasta is one of the very best to be had from any point; i it is visible from every part of the ground. The view of the Crags also is fine. The general environment is of the best. It is an oval-shaped amphitheater, three miles long by one-fourth to three-fourths of a mile wide, with receding walls two to thrce thousand feet in height, with lines and shades ef beauty at every reach. I doubt if a better place can be found in all Northern California, G Campers Outfts, Tents, Poles, Bedding, Cots, O1l-stoves, Folding-chairs, etc., shipped as baggage. For full information address T.
