Why Meérschaum. Colors.
Meérschaum would noticolor at all
but for the fact that it is boiled in
wax. If used in its natural state, it
would quickly become soiled, the material being'so porous that it absorbs
the slightest moisture from the hand or
anything it comes in contact with. But
the wax fills up the pores and gives the
meerschaum a sort of enamel. A pipe
that has been spoiled by overheating
go that it will not color can be reboiled
in wax and restored to ‘some extent.
This kind. of work is done in the trade
by experts, for it requires great skill.
“ he Spaniard at Home.
The Spaniard at home. is not understandable. He loves flowers and carries a pistol; he is passionately fond of
the theater, but does not keep quiet
that he or his: neighbors may hear; he
is charmingly courteous and inexcusably cruel; he shares his bread and wine
witb every stranger and stabs a friend
over a trifle. Such are the traits of
some. The btilfight is the favorite
antusement of this class,-and the bullfight, though declining somewhat in
popularity, is yet the national-diversion.

‘Japanese Cats and Dogs.
Japanese cats have the shortest kinds
of tails or else none at all.* One of
‘these cats, on being taken to ‘a*Huropean town, refused companionship
with-the long tailed cats there; but,
finding a cat whose tail had been cut
off by accident, the two became friendly at once.
Japanese dogs are almost destitute
of noses, having the nostrils set directly in the head. The smaller the
fiose the more valuable:the: breed.

Two Great Painters.
(When in Haarlem, Vandyke called
‘upon Frank Hals and, without mak+,
ing himself known, said that he was
anxious to have his portrait painted,
. but, as he was-in a great hurry, he}
could spare but two hours, at the end
of which the portrait must be done.
als went to work and finished it, and
Vandyke' was much pleased. But portrait painting seemed a very little
thing, said Vandyke, and heasked Hals
to change places with him. .Hals did
so, and as Vandyke finished his work
Hals hugged him enthusiastically, saying: “You are Vandyke. No one but
he can do what you have done.” And
so the two great masters became acquainted.

A “kerchief” (couvrechef) means a

means literally a small piece of, cloth
to cover the head, to be held in the
hand, to be put in the pocket.—London
