A GODDESS CHOSEN.
Native Daughters Will Also Provide a Handsome Goddess
‘of Liberty Fleat.
HE ACTION TAKEN BY LAUREL PARLOR
of Native Daughters, at their meeting last
evening, whereby the members of that organization
not only relieved the Fourth of July Commi:tee of
the perplexing task of selecting a Goddess of Liberty for tie
approaching celebration, but also, without solicitation, kindly
decided to make all arrangements for a handsome Goddess
of Liberty float, isa great mark of enterprise, and the geieral public, as well as the committee, gteatly appreciates t2¢
favor extended. In past years the selecting of a Goddess
and the providing of an appropriate float has been the mest
difficult problem the committee has had to deal with, a1d
the expeditious and satisfactory method by which it has beeti
disposed of this year is something that has never been accomplished heretofore.
At their meeting last evening, the Native Daughters
selected Miss Nora McArthur as Goddess of Liberty and
then made the Proposition to provide for the float, as stated
above. Later in the evening a committee appointed by
Chairman W. H. Martin of the Fourth of July Committee
consisting ef J. M. Walling, Major Simonds and W. H.
Dunlap, visited the Parlor to ascertain the decision of the
members relative to plans for the necessary equipments for
goddess, etc. The committee was informed of the action
taken by the Parlor and reported the same to the General
Committee, who tendered the Native Daughters a vote of
thanks for their great assistance. The committee will, of
course, render all the desired help that Laurel Parlor may
need in carrying out its contemplated. plans.
The selection of Miss McArthur as Goddess of Liberty
is an admirable one and the choice will give universal satisfaction to our people. She is a beautiful and graceful young
lady and will make a lovely and ideal goddess. :
The Native Daughters never do anything by halves, and
the public may feel assured that this feature of our coming
Fourth of July celebration will eclipse anything ever seen
in the county in this line.

McKinley Reciprocity
O ARGUE that the late President McKinley was a
_ Free-Trader, or was inclining toward Free-Trade
" ideas, during the latter days of his life, is as absurd
as for any one to say that Robert G. Ingersoll died a
Christian. The martyred President was a Protectionist during all his long and useful public career and he died a Protectionist and his utterances with reference to reciprocity will
admit of no other interpretation. He, as late as last June,
expressed himself on the question of reciprocity to Hon. W.
R. Taylor, who repsesents the Canton district in Congress,
in substances and in brief, thus: He ‘advocated teciprocity
only “in articles which we do not ourselves produce.” He
was opposed to any form of reciprocity “that takes from a
single American workingman his job.” If the Republican
Congress hew to this line there is no danger of any mistake.
William McKinley led the ‘Republican party along safe paths
and assisted them in untangling many a perplexing problem of government policy, and it is the part of wisdom to
follow his advice in this matter. No man had given the
subject of Tariff more thorough study and no man was more
thoroughly posted on it. American industries and American labor had no more staunch and able champion, and to
even insinuate that he would, in the slightest degree, betray
the trust so long reposed in him, is an insult to the memory
of the dead statesman.
It is in line with Democratic tactics, however, for . the
press of that party to misquote the dead and lie about the
_ living, when discussing national issuess, and the late President had been dead but a few days when the Democratic
press published extracts from his Buffalo speech, outrageously . '
garbled, in attempt to bolster up the discarded and ruinous
policy of Free-Trade,

Arrangements for the observance of
American Independence are geing
along smoothly, and everything tends
to show that the celebratien will be
the greatest and grandest that has
ever been held in this city. £
There was a good attendance at the
meeting in the City Hall last evening
when Ohairman W, H. Martin called order. Secretary Jas, F. Colley recorded
the minutes. The meeting was mainly
committees. The different chairmen
were present and reported progress,
but most of them asked for farther
time to make a definite statement.
G.J3. Rector, chairman ef the conimittee for the celebration on the 5th

it wou'd be well to have a battalion

companies; a grand baby show and
baby parade about 3:30 o'clock, with
prizes for the largeet baby, handsomest baby, etc., and a band concert. In
the evening’a grand ball by Company
C, with no expense to the Fourth of
July committee, and possibly a epectacular parade.
Fred E. Brown of the Invitation
committee reported that ajl preliminary arrangements had been made for
inviting the fire companies and civic
and military organizations in Nevada
and Placer counties. As neither Auburn. por Colfax will celebrate this
year, itis thought many ‘peeple from
those places will be with us on thoge
days.
B.8: Rector, of the music and hall
committee, made a preliminary report. He stated that’ he had corresponded with the Military Band of
Grass Valley, and received a reply
would play on the Feurth for $8 per
man or for the two days at the rate of
a per man. The proposition was reed as satisfactory, and Mr. Reefer was instructed to engage ft for the
Fourth and possibly the fifth. He
also reported that the Nevada Theatre,
could be obtained one day for $15; two
days for $25.
It was decided to have the battalion
drill on the fifth, and $50 was appropriated to pay the necessary expenses.
Mejor Simonds reported that he bad
conferred with Captain Tyrrell of Co.
T relative to the drill, and that without
delay he would write to headquarters
and endeavor to have the proper. orders issued. ©
Chairman W. H. Martin appointed
Dr. I. L. Bowman as chairman of the
committee to take charge of the evening amusements.
The general eommittee decided to
institute Maid of Henor contests in all
the towns and districts in the mountains the same as last year. A com.
mittee will be sent to each town to
look into the matter. The Invitation:
committee will have fall charge.
E. 8. Parke, chairman of the transportation committee, reported that
he had interviewed Manager O. P.
Lougbridge of the N.0. N. G. R. RB.,
and that the company will gratuitously ‘transport all floats and hose carriagee from Grass Valley to this city,
and that a special rate of fare will be
made. Mr. Parke aleo interviewed
Manager Skewes of the Traction Company and that the fare on the electric
cars would be 10 eents each way for
everybody. Mr. Parke was further-in‘structed to get special rates between
Colfax and Nevada City, and from Auburr to Colfax on the Central Pacific.
