The scientific statisical authorities of
Europe place the annual increase of
population at 8,000,000, an increase of
79,000,000 since 1870. The population
now stands about 881,000,000. A large
proportion of the population is military. What would this immense population do in a plow shareand praning

In the last thirty years the number
of American vessels engaged in foreign
trade has decreased 44 per cent. During the same period the number of
American vessels engaged in domestic
and coast trade ‘has increased 47 per
cent. The latter are protected from
competition of foreign vessels, while
the former are not,
Gone For His Remains.
Andy Jones of Willow Valley left
here yesterday for San Rafael, where
he goes to bring the remains of his late
brother, Thomas, to this city. In
Tuesday’s TRANSORIFT we published an
account of the drowning of Thomas! ee
Jones, while on his way to Cape Nome. .
His body was recovered and iaken to;
the morgue at San Rafael. The remains are expected to arrive here on
tomorrow evening’s train, and the
faneral will take place on Sunday.

1700 Tickets Sold.
The railroad company report having
sold seventeen hundred tickets for the
picnic yesterday. A few over seven
hundred of them were sold at the depot in this city. Somestyle about that

from a severe attack of diphtheria.

The Clear Oreek ‘school will close
next Tuesday and on Wednesday the
pupils and teacher will give a picnic,

Grass Valley ‘Council, Y. M. L., are
making’ great preparations for their
ball to be given on the 6th of next

Superintendent Bennett Opie has received the sad news from England that
his brother, Thomas Opie, died there

‘The Fire Department met last evening todiscuss the proposition presented
by the Nevada City Fire Department
about celebrating the Fourth of July.
The matter was freely talked about
and it was decided to leave the matter
to the citizens’ meeting when called to
arrange for a celebration.
A meeting of the directors of the Audftoriam Association was held at John
R. Tyrrell’s office last evening. It was
decided at this meeting to give Contractor Grant until 6 o’clock next Mon-~day evening to have his bond in this
city. Should he not do so all business
relations between him and the association will be at an end.
