Fourth of July Committees last evening it was decided that the fire companies would appoint committees to
decorate. It was also decided that

A. Legg and Chief Engineer Ed. W.

The Amusement Committee for the
evening of the fifth also met last evening and eoncluded that they would
give a free dance at Armory Hall as
the leading feature of their program.
A full orchestra will be employed and
every possible conven'ence for the
dancers and spectators. An efficient
corps of floor managers will be appointed and everything done to make
it a grand success. :
AlSneli was appointed to get a tea
from Grass Valley if possible, to contest for a prize with a tug-of-war team
of this city. It is proposed to have
the contest come off in connection
with the dance at Armory Hall.
George A. Legg was appointed “to
interview Miss Rogers and see if he

The Native Daughters of the Golden
West met last night and appointed
Mrs. J. M. Walling, Mrs. F. E. Wads_ worth, Miss Nellie Joyce and Miss
Lillie Mallen to meet with the Street
Parade Committee and ascertain what
part they desired the Native Daughters
to take.
They also appointed Mrs. J. H. Rogers, Mrs. J.G. O’Neill and Miss Nora
McArthor to arrange for the reception
of the ladies of the Auburn and Newcastle Basketbail Teams, the female
band and the visiting Native Daughters. :
Ed Hamlen, the cattle and sheep
man, has donated the Afternoon
Amusement Committee two fine lambs
to be given as prizes.

District Deputy.
F.'L. Arbogast, our genial and accommodating County Clerk, has been
appointed District Deputy Grand
President of the N. S. G. W. His
jurisdiction will take in the following

Mr. Arbogast is eminently fitted for

President of the local Parlor of Native Sons, and has always taken an
active part in everything tending to
the welfare and growth of the order.
In addition to being a good speaker,
Mr. Arbogast possesses that force
of character that marks the success
ful man and gives him standing with
all bis fraternal affiliations.
The Episcopal Mission.
The Episcopal mission, which opened ‘
at Trinity Church in this city last
night, was largely attended. Bishop
Moreland preached an eloquent sermon to an attentive congregation.
His text was taken from Jeremiah 28 :13.
“Thou hast broken the yokes of wood;
but thou shalt make for them yokes of
iron” :
After the sermon the Bisnop gave a
very interesting instruction, making
the Church catechism the basis of his
teaching.

GROUND GRIFFITHS.
Yesterday afternoon, Willie George,
a haif-breed Indian, came up from
Placer county, and went into the office
of Justice Green at Grass Valley, and
said he had heard the Sheriffs were
looking after him for the murder of
Joseph Griffiths, and he desired to
. give himself up.
He then said that he knew where
Mr. Griffiths was located, and that he
is now at Jackson, Amador county.
At the time of Mr. Griffiths disappearance, several Indians left the vicinity of Grass Valley, and by some it
was thought that he had either gone
with them, or been done up by some
of the crowd.
Sheriff Getchell telegraphed. to the
Sheriff of Amador county, but as the
officer was not at Jackson, it could
not be learned whether Mr. Griffiths
Company O, N. G. C., of this city. _
Mr. Watters’ remains have been
taken to the residence of his father,
on Gold Flat, and the funeral will
take place from there on Monday at
2 o'clock, Rev. W. A. Rimer officiating.

The statement made recently that L.
A. Walling had been appointed Regiimental Quartermaster Sergeant was
an error, R. P. Bowerman having been
re-appointed to that position by Major
Simonds, after a faithful service in
that capacity tor two years past. Mr.
Walling, however, has been appointed
Brigade Quartermaster Sergeant, aud
this office has been confounded with
the one held by Mr. Bowerman, hence
the mistake.

as to his whereabouts, but they met
