i “4 Nevapa City Daity TRANSCRIP! NAT P. BROWN, Proprietor. FRED BE. BROWN, Manager.—— = TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION jie : ‘ByfMem, = + + °* $6 Per Year. By Carrier, 12 1-2 Per Week Delivered to any vart «fgthe city. : a, . : oe Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at ‘Nevada ‘City MAY 24, 1904 — REPUBLICAN PLATFORM . ’ SPEAKS FOR ITSELF HE REPUBLICAN PLATFORM which was adopted at the State Oontion at Sacramento last week requires neither explanation nor intetpretation. It speake for Iteelf in clear unmistakable language that admits of no misconetraction and is characterized by no subtle qual-: {fications or evasions. Its forthright declarations are in striking contrast to the prolix subterfages and declamatory platitudes of the platform promulgated by the Democrats at Santa Cruz. Passing by the warm and deserved endorsement given the President, Gove ernor Pardee and Senator Perkins and Bard, the platform reaffirms adherence to the principles for which the Republican party has stood since its foandation—eound finance, progressive administration, protection to domestic fodastry, enlightened development of the nation’s latent resources, equal rights and antrammeled opportunity, the building ap of an American merchant marine and a broad, firm foreign policy. Tnis is simply a pledge that the record of achievement will be maintained, that the promise of the futare wili be the fulfillment of the past. The aims, objects and achievements of the Republican party are expressed in this single comprehensive paragraph, on which a confident appeal can be made to the intelligence and patriotism of the Republic: ‘We here reattirm our fight in those principles and policies. We declare in favor of continued protection to American indus‘ry and labor; a sound system of finance; the building up of an American merchant marine, that our carrying trade be under our own flag; anavy am; le for all purposes of offense and defense and ite constrnction in part at government navy yards; the immediate construction of the Panama canal; the continuance of the policy of Chinese exclusion; the complete protection of every American citizen in his constitutional rights every where; the improvement of the navigable streame of the United States and all necessary appropriations therefor, and the. policy. of national expe:ditares for the preservation of our forests and the reclamation of the arid lande and the work now being inaugarated by the National Administration to that end.” “When the rights of the citizen, as well as the public domain and the navigable waters, aze fully protected, there can be no question of trust and corporate discrimination. The Republican party has met and solved every problem of government that has been presented since it took the reins of power in 1861. It has grappled with slevery, disunion, repudiation and polygamy, and successively overthrew them. It has cemented the bands of the union, given it a firmer tone to national authority and inculcated a broader patriotism; expanded its commerce and jurisdiction, and magnified its power and influence abroad. It has brought peace and order at home and maintained peace with honor and prestige in our national intercourse with foreign natious. The scheme of the Republican policy has tended to repress disorderd of every kind and to abate discontent by removing their causes, chief of which are the poverty resulting from low wages and the grievances arising from paralyzed industry. The history of the Republican party is one of performance, of which the party in Oalifornia is justly proud. This pride ie given eloquent but restrained expression in the Sacramento platform—a document that’ ie instinct with the genius of Abrabam Lincoln, Ulysses 8. Grant, William MeKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. TUESDAY.... slelau sieeve bare haa le adalat nce HANS Sige ee BY > 42> POP H HY 4 SUCCESSFUL TEST BALLOT MACHINES OR THE FIRST TIME in California an election of congiderable mag. nitade has been beld witb ballot machioes and the result’ fs very satisfactory. machines were used, and worked admirably, according to. the reports of the local press. The voting was rapid and without the slightest hitch. The vote was tabulated and the result announced in fifteen minutes, after the polleclosed, One precinct was couuted and the retarns made up in six minutes. Four minutes later the returus from another precinct came in and. the other precincts two minutes afterward. Within thirty-five minutes-after the polls closed the complete returns were given to the newspapers for pablication. This is a marvelous improvement over the old system. In ite account of the election the Mercury had this to say of balloting by machine: “The voting machines greatly facilitated both the casting end counting of: the ballots. The people had studied their working so carefully that there was but veny little trouble experienced in their operation. The. Inspectors ‘were . assiduous in seeing that the voters mavipulated them correctly and very few mistakes were made. “The average time taken by voters to record their ballots was fees than Othere were much slower, which gave rise tothe impression tbat that there would be however, did not prove. to be the case. It was simply the difference of the handiness of individuals fn half a minute. Some of them got through in three or four seconds, a great deal of scratching shown by the result, That, _ working the machines.” i This is apparently as satiefactory as the recent election in Milwaukee, In which ballot machines were used.
