Company C, N. G. C., at its meeting last night decided
to-be guided by the decision of the Memorial Day committee,
relative to. changing the date from Saturday to-Sunday, and
therefore will decorate the graves of their dcceased com-—
rades on Sunday also, withthe G.A.R.
The above action taken last evening by the Memorial
Day Committee in changing the date to Sunday, as well as! Gakiand
the action of Co. C in coinciding with the G. A. R., gives
universal satisfaction and is commended by our citizens generally. The business men greatly appreciate the favor which#,
has been extended them in this special particular.
. THE G. A. R. ENCAMPMENT.
HE Thirty-Seventh National Encampment, G. A. R., which ‘will be
held in San Francisco next Augnst,
promises to be the greatest event in the
annals of that patriotic organization and
in the history of California as well. The
people of San Francisco are prepared to
accommodate the vast throng that is expected to sojourn
within their gates during the Encampment. To see-the
brilliant illumination of the city, coupledgwith other unusual
attractions, will be worth the trip. The principal feature of
the electrical display will be the courts of honor, of which
there are to be quite a number, spanned across the intersec—
tions of the pfincipal streets. Each consists of a canopy of
dazzling lights suspended in mid air far above the ground,
from which will extend blazing streamers in graceful loops,
reaching to the ornamental pillars on the sidewalk. Between
these courts of ‘honor and extending for many ‘squares beyond them in every direction, garlands with myriads of incandescents will span the streets, making night brightereven
than day, and revealing the wonderful sights of San Francisco, in which the Queen of the Pacific abounds. The Veterans of the Mexican War, of whom 685 live in
California, and 965 on the Pacific Coast, more than can be
mustered in any other section of the Union, will takea
prominent part in the parade and other demonstrations.
The Veterans of the Spanish-American War will be
largely represented, because San Francisco, the gateway.to
the Philippines, has, more than any other city in the United
States, bade Godspeed to a greater number of our troops
leaving for these scenes of conflict/and conquest, and ‘again
welcomed them on their return, crowned with victory and
glory.
The Naval parade upon the beautiful land-locked Bay of
San Francisco will be a feature long to be remembered, and
the display of California’s agricultural and mineral wealth,
coming from the fertile valleys, hillsides and from the bowels
of the mountains, will certainly be a valuable object lesson.
Encampment week -will-be one round of festivities for
San Francisco and all her guests. A part of the program
for the week has been decided upon and includes the following, subject, of course, to many additions, and perhaps, to
some minor changes:
Mo » Aug. 17th, will be devoted to recelving and locating Veterans and
their fr’ 8; reception and “open house’’ at all headquarters.
Tuesday, Aug. 18th—Parade of United States Troops stationed at the Presidio, Marine Oorps, Sailors of the United States War Sbips, Apprentices
from Naval Station, Marines from abe A Yard, National Guard of California,
Naval Veterans, ex-Prisoners of War, Military, Semi-Military and other patriotic organizations, Native Sons of the Golden West.
Wednesday, August 19:h--Parade of G. A. R. In the evening there will
be reunions of the Civil War Associations and camp-fires in the evening.
Thursdey, Aug. 20th—Opening of the Encampment in the Graud Opera
‘ House. .Two sessions will probebly be held. More receptions, reunions and
in the evening.
