Congregational Church, Oakland, says of it : : HAZEL CREEK, April 14, 1834. ¢ Tam more-than-pleased.with it— ‘ delighted. The place seems to me to embody all available points fora camp— dry, firm soil, good water (the very best): fine chances for drainage, and scenery unsurpa‘sable. The view of Mt, Shasta is one of the very bert to be had from any point; i it is visible from every part of the ground, The view of the Crags.also is fine. The gen.. eral environment is of the best. It is an oval-shaped amphitheater, three miles long by one-fourth to three-fourths of a mile wide, with receding walls two to three thousand feet in height, with lines and shades ef beauty at every reach, I doubt if a better place can be found in all Northern California. = Campers Outfits, Tents, Poles, Beddiag, Cots, Oil-stoves, Folding-chairs, ete., shipped os bazgage. After an existence of much utility of about 400 years it is noticed that italic is declining measurably in the favor of printers, particularly on . newspaper work. ‘It is occasionally seen, however, in important editorials. This lackof favor has, it would seem, become more marked since typesetting machines have come so largely into: use on the daily newspapers, The increased output from the machines has a strong tendency to do away with the use of italic, every effort being directed to the simplification of their product. Thus it has been considered good enough to put the names of newspapers and other titles in roman on newspapers, the composition for which plaint has been uttered, and if there has been any comment it has been too weak to. make itself heard. The public does not care anything about the matter. All that is wanted is a readable paper. When machines are turning out thousands of ems per hour in the usual rush to get a paper to press, there is no time to be frittered away in going to an italic case situated perhaps at the other end of the composing room. The face stands as much chance of being used as there is of reverting to the custom of correcting in the form. —Bookmaker. ° A Philadelphia Inquiry, The Philadelphia Inquirer quotes statistics showing that, while New York'received 65 percent of the World’s fair imports, Philadelphia received only onethird of 1 per cent. It declares that Tacoma, E} Paso-and Laredo are commercially ahead of Philadelphia, and it wants to know why these things are so, : Early Depravity. Dr. Goodman after an ominous. pause, addressing his wife, ‘will you please .hand me my heaviest slipper aud leave the room?
